SOLVED. Fantasy Novel. Female protagonist with affinity for Water who obtains a rare gem from a fish during her womanhood ceremony? [s]

Looking for an older fantasy novel (5+ years ago?) with a female protagonist. In the opening of the book, she naked and menstruating and must participate in a tradition where she must swim to find a certain type of fish which will give her a gem. She does this and ends up with a rare gem, along with a common one (one blue and one orange, I believe?). A witch or crone takes notice and takes her as her apprentice, bent on using her to control the four Elements?

There is also a man who must take part in a race and he gains affinity towards Fire.

I also remember that near the end of the book, the girl gains an affinity for Wind and is painfully granted wings to try and escpae from Death.

Read this book quite a while ago so I might be wrong with some details. Thank you in advance for any help!
