I've actually heard that you can't post reviews for books you haven't purchased on Amazon, or you risk having your account deleted. Is this true?
No, Jessica. Not true. You might have your review deleted if Amazon thinks you know the author, though, or if they suspect a paid review. If you are reviewing a book you received free for a review, it's wise to say so. Something like 'I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.'It's important to say the 'honest review ' so there is no suggestion it was free in return for a 5* review.
It's okay to add a disclaimer, but please note that any sort of wording that includes "in return" or "in exchange" will likely get the review flagged and deleted. From the sign up rules:It is not necessary to leave any kind of disclaimer in your review, but ultimately, it is up to individuals. Reviews that state you received a copy ‘in return’ for a review will probably be removed/not allowed by amazon.com. ‘I received a free copy from the author without an obligation to review’ would be more acceptable if you feel the need to add a disclaimer.
I don't get this free 5 star review. If my books crap I'd rather be told that so I can get better at writing. I'm not writing to become the next Stephen King and make millions. It's a hobby and writing my books just shares my mind with the world (god help you all)
