Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Possible Reads for the 10/22/2022 Read-a-Thon

The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom The Book Woman's Daughter (The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, #2) by Kim Michele Richardson The Girls of Mischief Bay (Mischief Bay, #1) by Susan Mallery The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill Safe with Me by Amy Hatvany Apple Turnover Murder (Hannah Swensen, #13) by Joanne Fluke

To be honest I will likely read whatever strikes me as interesting in the moment; however, these are all books at the top of my list to read.

My daughter bought it when she visited the University of Virginia on her 8th grade trip. She likes all things spooky so she is just starting to explore some of Poe's writings & was curious about his life.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Tomorrow is the big day & I am so excited! I am like a child on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa. I've got my snacks ready (including my R-a-T tradition: Almond M&Ms). I've cleared my calendar and my child is now a teen so more than able to keep herself fed & entertained for the day. So I plan to read, read, read!

As for a TBR pile. I thought long and hard about this. I am a mood reader and always have to go where my mood leads me. I also read several books at once. So I've decided instead of making a list or stack of books to choose from I will just grab whatever is on my library stack (they need to be returned soon so I need to get them read) or whatever is on my night stand. Some books I may have already started, but some may be the first time I've cracked the cover. But between the 2 piles I have over 30 options from a variety of genres.

I will be tracking my reading in the post above; however, I hope to sign on every 3 or 4 hours to join in on any online fun AND to post updates to my thread here.

Only a little over 12 hours until we begin!

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Opening Survey:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Amarillo, Texas, USA

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? They all appeal to me, but I think Adult Assembly Required by Abbi Waxman or The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner. I loved previous books by both these authors so I have high expectations for both of these.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? My almond M&M’s (they are a read-a-thon tradition for me)

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I love to travel & when I can’t be out exploring the world I love to read travel books with wonderful photos.

5) What are your goals for this readathon? To spend as much concentrated time reading as possible

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Half-Point Progress Report

How many books have you been reading? Have you finished any? Are you on track with respect to your readathon goals so far? I read from three books so far & finished one. I Finished Peanut Butter Panic & have read from Atlas Obscura: An Explorer's Guide to the World's Hidden Wondersand Love and Other Words.

Have you eaten real food today? (Not just junk food, ACTUAL HEALTHY FOOD) What was your favorite food or beverage so far? Yes for lunch we had noodles & for dinner this evening we had Italian chicken (crock pot meal). I haven’t had a favorite snack so far although I have snacked on my traditional almond M&Ms

Have you been participating in any of the activities on our social media (sprints, photo challenges, discussion questions, BINGO, etc.) Sort of, I am not good about participating in the moment, but I sign on every few hours to catch up on discussions, etc. I have been doing the sprints, but again I don’t update that info online until I sign on later.

Are you growing sleepy? Do you plan to nap, or stop early, or are you extending the readathon hours to include sleep? I am a bit tired, but I plan to try to power through as much as possible and stick to the original 24 hour schedule.

Have you been outside yet today? Have you had much exercise (besides the heavy lifting required to hold your book)? I haven’t been outside, but I have been doing a small amount of housework when I start feeling sleep. Nothing too intense, just laundry, dishes, etc.

How is your readathon going, overall? Overall, pretty good. I always think I am reading more than I am. I’ve got a stopwatch running when I actually read so I know exactly the amount of time spent reading. It is amazing how much those little chores away from reading add up.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Closing Survey

1. How many books did you read during this readathon? Did you have any favorites? I read from 5 different books. I liked all of them even though I am "still in progress" on 3 of them

2. How many books did you finish? 2

3. Did you accomplish your goals for this readathon? So-so. I wanted to spend concentrated amounts of time reading and I was able to accomplish that. However, I had hoped to be able to beat my old record of 18 hours (on the stop clock) actually reading & I didn't even come close (ended with 10 hrs and 51 mins)

4. How did your snacks and meals work out? Are there things you would change about the food and beverages side of your readathon for next time? I didn't eat a lot of my snacks. My stomach just felt "off" most of the day so nothing was very appealing. I think next time I will of course still have my almond M&Ms (they are tradition), and veggies & dip, but I will also stock up on sandwich stuff to make sub sandwiches or something similar for meals.

5. Did you enjoy this readathon? What was the most successful part of your readathon? What would you change for next time? I enjoyed myself a lot. I was able to get whole blocks of time spend reading. I got tired earlier than I thought I would so I am not sure how to combat that next time, but that will likely be my focus. I ended up going to bed just after midnight (CST) & I know normally I can stay up later than that reading

6. What Dewey’s social media sites did you visit during this readathon? What activities did you participate in? Do you plan to complete those activities over the remainder of the weekend? I participated on the Facebook group, the official website & on Goodreads. I will be taking today on catching up on posts & discussions I missed.

I had hoped to read more, but for some reason I became very tired shortly after midnight (CST) and decided to go to bed. I felt rest was more beneficial for my overall health and well being. I of course will spend some of today reading the books I started but did not finish. I am already looking forward to July for the Reverse R-a-T and then next October for the official R-a-T!

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Here is my TBR Possibilities Mountain. I am such a mood reader & I usually read multiple books at the same time, so I wanted a good size pile to choose from as the mood strikes me.

Since I do read multiple books at a time, I usually only finish 1 or 2 entire books during a R-a-T, so this R-a-T my goal is to read 1000 pages across any books I read. I probably won't read from every book on this pile, but like I said I need variety. Of course I will likely wake up Saturday wanting nothing on my pile and decide to pick something from my shelves.

Here are my TBR Possibles for the April 2024 Read-a-Thon:

The Tall Pine Polka (Ballantine Reader's Circle) by Lorna Landvik The Wedding Bees by Sarah-Kate Lynch Forever Friday by Timothy Lewis The Honey-Don't List by Christina Lauren Patty Jane's House of Curl by Lorna Landvik The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott Adult Assembly Required by Abbi Waxman The Block Party by Jamie Day The Two-Family House by Lynda Cohen Loigman The Clover Girls by Viola Shipman The Party Upstairs by Lee Conell Forever Beach by Shelley Noble The Headmaster's Wife by Thomas Christopher Greene We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt The Stolen Book of Evelyn Aubrey by Serena Burdick List of Ten by Halli Gomez The Keeper of Stories by Sally Page Maggie Finds Her Muse by Dee Ernst The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand The Grammarians by Cathleen Schine The House of Lincoln by Nancy Horan Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders by Julianna Baggott Best Served Hot by Amanda Elliot Recipe for a Charmed Life by Rachel Linden I Know You Remember by Jennifer Donaldson The Marriage Pact by Michelle Richmond The Reminders by Val Emmich
