Oh man, I'm sorry! That sucks! Give yourself a break, you had good intentions. Our bodies can be assholes! Hope you got to relax and read this afternoon.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments I wasn't sure if I would be joining this time around. I recently went through a divorce and now share custody of my child with my ex. This R-A-T happens to fall on my weekend with my daughter and those weekends are very precious to me.

However, I know there will be times she will be sleeping or doing her "own thing" as sometimes mom is "boring" to a 10 year old. So, I decided to sign up and read when I can. Although, I might not read the entire day (or even attempt to), I will likely get some reading done.

So, I will see y'all there. I will select some books later in the week as my possible pile!

It was okay. It was a very quick read and I liked the main characters well enough. Some of the plot was a bit hard to believe, BUT overall the story was decent.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments I am SUCH a mood reader that I never know what will catch my eye. However, I like to start the read-a-thon with a LARGE pile of possible reads in a variety of genres to keep me from just wondering aimless through my shelves.

So, here is my "Possible Reads" selections for this read-a-thon:

The Book That Matters Most by Ann Hood I Was Told It Would Get Easier by Abbi Waxman The PMS Murder (A Jaine Austen Mystery series) by Laura Levine The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley Separation Anxiety by Laura Zigman The Memory Collectors by Kim Neville A Children's Bible by Lydia Millet The Operator by Gretchen Berg The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan This One Is Mine by Maria Semple An Appetite for Murder (Key West Food Critic Mystery, #1) by Lucy Burdette The Look of Love by Sarah Jio The Fifth Avenue Story Society by Rachel Hauck Scone Cold Killer (All-Day Breakfast Café Mystery #1) by Lena Gregory Himself by Jess Kidd One Foot in the Grove (Olive Grove Mystery #1) by Kelly Lane Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind (Miss Julia, #1) by Ann B. Harrow Marshmallow Malice (Amish Candy Shop Mystery #5) by Amanda Flower

Of course, I may add more as the mood strikes me. Haha!

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments First Check-In (April 2021 R-a-T)

Well I got off to to a slow start. I had an unexepected life matter keep me up most of last night and after having some normality return right about the time for the read-a-thon to start (7 am my time) I excitedly got comfy in my chair with I Was Told It Would Get Easier by one of my favorite authors, Abbi Waxman. I read a few pages and last about 10 minutes into that first hour and promptly fell asleep!

I woke up about 10:30 not sure where I was or what day it was. When I noticed the variety of drinks and snacks on my side table and the huge stack of books setting next to my chair I remembered "oh crap, the read-a-thon" Since 10:30 fell smack in the middle of a "sprint hour" I picked up The Lost Apothecary and settled down to read for the remainder of the sprint hour and then a bit more.

So all I've accomplished so far is that I've read for about an hour total. Pages read dismissal (37 pages TOTAL). BUT I think hopefully my best hours of this read-a-thon are still ahead of me.

I will spend a few more moments trying to catch up on some of the online fun and then it is back to my chair, my tea and my books! Hopefully, less napping and more reading will be accomplished this afternoon.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Over on the Main Dewey Website Shawn (aka Mr. Geek) asked "Are you a coffee drinker or a tea drinker? "

I am mainly a coffee drinker! I LOVE a nice hot cup of coffee flavored with my favorite creamers (usually some flavor of caramel or cinnamon). However, I can't stand decaf coffee. And recently, I've begun to have some pretty severe issues with my sinuses. One thing to avoid when struggle with sinus pain and inflammation is caffeine. I am a caffeine fiend. BUT instead it has been strongly suggested that I stick with herbal teas (no caffeine) and light on the sugar for the time being. So today I am drinking a peach tea with just a tad bit of sugar. Hoping the hot liquid will relieve my sinus passages, but for sure missing my hot coffee!

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Opening Survey!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? - Amarillo, Texas (USA)

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? There are several I've been wanting to read. I think I am really looking forward to finishing The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Almond M&Ms (my R-a-T tradition)

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I am a divorced mom to a lovely 12 year old little girl. I also have several furbabies, 2 cats (Sarah and Cooper) and 1 dog (Piper). We also have 2 fish to complete the menagerie.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? I am not sure what I will do differently. I always want to increase my actual time spent reading. I have these lofty goals and then life seems to always intrude.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments What are some ways that you track your readathon? If you use a planner, I would love to see some pictures!

I'm pretty boring. I just make written notes in a plain notebook with times, # of pages read, and titles. Nothing fancy.

I've been struggling with sinus issues that keep me from sleeping comfortably at night and yet the medication makes me overly tired. At the same time I was told yesterday to "severely limit" my caffeine and sugar intake to try to reduce the inflammation. It was just a combination of not much quality sleep last night, the morning dose of my medicine, sitting somewhat upright in a comfy chair and a warm furry cat snoring away in my lap that sort of just put me to sleep I guess.

I'm about to get offline and back to reading. If I let myself, I'd spend the entire time chatting online with other readers and get no actual reading done. lol

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? I have several books in progress as I tend to switch between them as I start feeling "tired" The main ones right now are: The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner I Was Told It Would Get Easier by Abbi Waxman The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian and The Secret History by Donna Tartt
2. How many books have you read so far? I haven't finished any yet
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I would like to finish up The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner and I Was Told It Would Get Easier by Abbi Waxman
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? My start was a bit delayed because I fell asleep right at the start and took a long nap, however not too many disruptions since then...just stopping to refresh snacks and drinks.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How many pages I've read overall so far...253 Pages (which for me is great because I tend to be a slow reader)

message 135: by Lena (new)

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments Closing Survey

How would you assess your reading overall? Meh...the amount of time I read was mediocre. I've done better at other R-a-Ts, but I've also done worse.

Did you have a strategy, and if so, did you stick to it? My strategy was to at LEAST participate in ALL of the sprints. However, this did not happen. I did participate at least partially in 5 of them though.

What was your favorite snack? My Almond M&Ms, although I've been making a little salad lately with cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese topped with balsamic vinegar and I made some of that during the read-a-thon as a "snack" and it was delicious.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments April 2021 Read-a-Thon Wrap Up.

So I didn't read nearly as much as I would have liked. I am on medication currently that causes me to get extremely drowsy so after taking that both in the AM and PM I fell asleep for a couple of long "naps".

I also did not finish a single book during the read-a-thon. I often switch between multiple books and this time was no exception. However, I did finish I Was Told It Would Get Easier by Abbi Waxman shortly after the read-a-thon officially ended. I LOVE this author and this is her most recent book so I was super excited it was available at my library! I can say I was not disappointed at all! A wonderful book and great for any mom going through the teen years with a daughter.

So, my totals:

Total Time Read: 7 hours and 47 minutes
Total Pages Read: 334 Pages

I have In a Book Club Far Away by Tif Marcelo from BOTM, have you finished it and/or did you enjoy what you read? I hated Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell . I've tried another of Mitchell's books The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell and hated that as well. I may try one more someday but I just think he's not an author for me.

I haven't finished In a Book Club Far Away yet (I tend to read several books at once so it takes me a while to actually finish books). However, so far I am enjoying it. It is pretty "typical" so far of these sorts of "female friendship" books.

Cloud Atlas is a bit odd for my liking, BUT it was a book for a challenge so I am trying to finish.

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 214 comments I am not 100% sure how much I will be participating this time. I softheartedly agreed to help a friend in need this weekend and I don't think I'll have much reading time.

However, I plan to read and participate when I can.

My list of possible reads include: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell On the Bright Side The New Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 85 Years Old by Hendrik Groen The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult Lemon Drop Dead (Amish Candy Shop Mystery #6) by Amanda Flower Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty The Transformation of Things by Jillian Cantor
