I really feel bad for Laia. I don't think she knows what she got herself into.

I'm at the part where he's at the first trial and it's not looking good for Helene because of her injury and he's doing everything he can for her. I just want him to kick the crap out of Marcus and Zak and win this thing!

I have to say Helene went from not sure if I really like her to she's not too bad. She earned some brownie points by helping Laia. I just can't believe it's OK for men to treat slave women as horribly as they do, but I guess this is a part of our real history as well and why I'm so enraged by it. That this was a reality.

I think you're right about who the traitors could be. I was thinking that too. And they are totally taking advantage of Laia. I bet they don't end up helping with her brother, something's not right with that.

That's probably why he is not a psychopath like her! I think there is a twist with who his dad is. Maybe not in this book but I think it's going to be a reveal for some reason.

****Spoiler****
They are all horrible but I think this one involves a test against his friends not with them, I think. We shall see!

Ok Jackie I see what you were saying!! I learned something new. Thank You!! :)

Want to read it together?

Want to read it together?"
Yes, I would like that! Do you have the second one already?
I don't, but I'm going to see if I can find a copy through Overdrive today if not then I have to wait for library to open tomorrow.

Do we designate chapters for each day or just read at will?

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.
Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.
