Based on the Wheel of Time fans I've known, you might be in a minority on the cover.

How is it so far? I loved the first one, and the show is pretty good, too.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. Strange, dark, and beautiful fantasy about triplet queens with incredible powers, but only one can rule...

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments The Last Wish was a great audio book. Originally written in Polish, it's supposed to also be the basis of a game, although I've never seen that. The stories were wonderful. I gave it 4 stars in my review here.

Andrea | 3538 comments I fininshed The Beetle on my eReader, switched now to our group anthology as my current e-book The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil Genius by John Joseph Adams

Silvana (silvaubrey) @Landree: I loved it! well this is a reread but I am still finding myself chuckling over the characters' antiques. There is one character that's rather boring so I am reading his POV really slowly in this second try just in case I missed stuff during the first read.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments I found a sneak preview on Tor.com for Lee Modesitt's new Recluce book, Recluce Tales: Stories from the World of Recluce. I read it & added the book to my To-Read shelf here with a short blurb about it & the series. I wanted to include a link to the series itself & got quite a surprise. Part of my review of the first book in the series is included in its explanation at the top when you click on the 'more' link. Am I that much of a fan boy?!!!
;)

I picked up the audio program How Great Science Fiction Works from Audible when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago. It's a set of "Great Courses" lectures of scifi by Gary Wolfe; Only available as audio. It was pretty interesting. Wolfe covers the scope of sci-fi (not fantasy) from Frankenstein to present (one bonus is that this is a 2016 lecture series, and so it's actually up-to-date on contemporary works as well.) It looks at sci-fi from historical perspective, there are lectures on specific movements (new wave, cyberpunk, feminism, war), as well as common sci-fi themes such as space travel, time travel, robots, alternate history, disasters and apocalyptic fiction.)

Well worth a listen if you spot it on sale again.

David Day (davidday) | 29 comments I enjoyed the black company book I read. I bought it when I was out of reading material and waiting on a delayed flight.

Andrea | 3538 comments Finished Dark Ascension (not as good as the other three in the series, think it tried to bite off more than it could chew, something I notice in UF series where each book needs to be bigger than the previous and this one went too big too fast) and the Halloween story anthology.

Now on to my last Halloween-themed book for the month. A few years ago I started reading all of Rice's Vampire Chronicles, one or two a year. When I got to the end of the series, Rice came out with Claudia's Story, so that kept me going another year. I figured that must be the end since she said she wouldn't write anymore Lestat books.

Then came Prince Lestat (the premise of which was silly, but I seem to be able to enjoy reading anything Rice writes, something about her style and characters). I thought this year would end the pattern, as the next Lestat book comes out only at the end of November (Atlantis...seriously??), but Goodreads pointed out I hadn't yet read The Vampire Lestat the graphic novel.

Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat A Graphic Novel by Faye Perozich

So seems I can keep the tradition going after all.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments I'm still chuckling from The Eyre Affair, first of the Thursday Next (that's the heroine's name) series by Jasper Fforde. It was a fun, fantasy-mystery tour of an alternate world where literature is more important than politics. Wonderfully written & read. I gave it a 4 star review & look forward to reading another soon.

Gary Sundell | 214 comments Closing in on the end of The Shadow Rising (Wheel of Time, #4) by Robert Jordan [book:The Shadow Rising|8153991. I have about 120 pages to go. I expect a major roller coaster ride in these last pages based upon the prior 3 books in the series.

Dragonlance is one of the few things I've reread more than once, discovered them in high school. Recently read the Rastlin/Caramon prequels.

Interestingly enough, was also when I encountered Pern. The Harper Hall trilogy was on my summer reading list. Xanth and Dune too. Dragonlance was not, but it was in the school library. Must admit I had a pretty cool selection of books on those lists, good for the fantasy/scifi fan.
