Really good book on the Me 163.

Marc | 1749 comments Finally finished this one off last night:

Revenge of the Red Raiders The Illustrated History of the 22nd Bombardment Group During World War II (Eagles Over the Pacific, #2) by Walter Gaylor Revenge of the Red Raiders: The Illustrated History of the 22nd Bombardment Group During World War II

Really good book. Very comprehensive account of a little known bombardment group (the strafers in the 5th AF seem to get most of the attention), and I hope to have a review up today or tomorrow.

Dimitri | 1413 comments Two insightful passages from Patton's Vanguard: The United States Army Fourth Armored Division :

A memo from Division cited several bad habits that needed to be cropped: no discarding of American weapons for German ones, uniform infractions, discarding insignia of rank, not using lemon extract that was included with the rations [ read: you must use it. It wasn't a popular taste ] pillaging, smoking while driving... (p.77)

It takes away the insecurities about my own 4th A.D. uniform. I'm all regulation about the chinstrap when walking the hills of the Hürtgen Forest, tough. The sound of scratching branches all over.

The structure of the panzer brigades was heavily influenced by the German experience against the Russians. In addition to the panzers there were two bataillons of panzer grenadiers but very little in the way of specialized reconnaisance elements and no integral artillery support. (p. 128)

This is probably explained somewhere in the two-part Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front by Robert Forczyk, but what is the influence ? Panzer Grenadiers as a response to the Soviet "tank hunter" motorised infantry perhaps.
