Poldark : Series Two

Oh, now, when I first posted it, it was normal size! What happened to the photo!?"

When I read your coffee remark, it was all scrunched!

Haha! I saw one the other day that had that old War song.
War (leggan)!
What is it good for?
Absolutely Nothing!
Say it again...

Haha, that's funny!
That little concerned baby makes just about anything funnier.

Since so many of you love the fashions, have you noticed that Demelza's being dressed in more flattering colors? In the scenes where she meets up with Verity, she's dressed in a sea foam green that matches her eyes exactly.
And Catherine, that saucy thing! Her clothing is so vibrant. I've been told I have decent skin, but I either want hers or her makeup artist.

I love Caroline's costumes! They are easily the best there has been on the show. That blue dress was stunning, and the berry colored riding habit. I saw an interview with their makeup artist, but unfortunately she only talked about applying "dirt" to the poorer characters, etc.
I'm not really a fan of Demelza's costumes, but I do think they're more flattering. They had originally called Eleanor Tomlinson in to cast for the role of Elizabeth, I wonder what they would have done with her wardrobe.
I wish I could figure out how to post gifs to goodreads, because I have one of George trying to box in his high heels. It's even funnier on repeat.

Will look for that!
I just think that they've moved Demelza from dirty beige and gray to colors that flatter her more.
But nothing dazzles like Caroline, and I'm sure it's supposed to be that way!

Well, if you'd seen the episode, you'd call her "saucy", too!
She told the doctor something was wrong with her mouth, which of course, led to him asking her to open her mouth so he could look inside. And wider, please......and they almost..............but, no. She made a flip comment about the poor mine workers who had scurvy, so he rejected her cheque, left her, and she had to buy them all oranges to redeem herself. But I think she's got a chance with the good doctor.....

Gonna have to re-watch, because a student phoned just as the saucy Katherine was making a pass at Ross
I knew it was coming. I knew before the season even started, I just didn't know how, but you knew as soon as he told his son he would read him a bedtime story that it was coming. I'll miss Francis, and Kyle Soller, but if you think this was bad, it's just getting started. :/
And does anyone actually buy Elizabeth's line that she cared about Francis at all???
Meanwhile, the Doctor was adorable talking to Caroline.

Omg, this opens up a world of possibilities for complications.......Ross is still thinking about it, and now Elizabeth will be free. And if she doesn´t wind up with him, then will she feel pushed into something with the skeevy Warleggan? At least it looks as though the good doctor will keep Katherine amused.........unless of course, she starts considering ¨comparison shopping¨.........ayayay!

I haven't read the books either, I know from the UK Poldark media sites. I'm sure we'll all have some interesting ideas to discuss a couple of episodes from now...

That was some first-class smoldering going on there....

Trying to, but work keeps getting in the way. I´ve seen most of it, just missing a few excerpts or half shows here and there
So I found this. It would be helpful if George acted like he were more interested in Elizabeth, and less like he's interested in Ross...

I haven't watched The Durrells, but the previews look pretty funny. I might give it a try if I have a chance later this week.

Lol, that is so true! But I think he knows he needs Ross to get to Elizabeth

I'm annoyed bc I just got home and turned on the set bc I wanted to watch "The Secret of Crickley Hall"(yes, I know it's not new, but I've never seen it). And found out that it's only playing at 2am. Really!? Yeesh, why advertise it!? Tease...

Guys, I'm watching it later tonight, but I already know what's about to happen... I just want to say that I know there are a lot of varied opinions about what exactly is taking place. All opinions are welcome, but let's keep it respectful of everyone's views. I definitely don't expect it of our group, but I've seen some people get nasty, and even make threats over this episode...

MomToKippy wrote: "are you kidding? hmmm. Just a tv show. Not worth getting nasty about . Hey I missed last week. What happened with Caroline and the doctor last week? Was a very dramatic episode tonight! Loved it."
There is a difference of view over whether or not (view spoiler) It's been a mess, people have been threatened, Aiden Turner has had to come out and defend himself, because he said he didn't feel it was. There have been articles written over whether or not we can except Ross as a character anymore, especially a romantic hero, women's group have been threatening boycotts of the BBC. Apparently people who have been fans since the books were published say this comes up every time Poldark has a resurgence of popularity, but it's never been this bad.

Last week Caroline waited for Dwight so they could elope, but he didn't show because of the raid. She though he was having second thoughts and left for London with her uncle.

But now that she knows what happened, she still won't forgive him. So I shall not speak of her again.

I noticed that there was a warning before the episode, and didn't remember having seen one before.

Was it presented that way in the original series, as well? How about the book?

I'm not certain about the books. I've seen excerpts that to me appear to be similar to the episode. Also there are passages in a later book that recounts the experience from Elizabeth's point of view that have her thinking fondly of it as a lovemaking experience, and those are not the thoughts of a woman who has been violated in any way. I've heard people who have read the books say it was not, and others who say they felt it was assault in that book, but changed their mind after getting Elizabeth's thoughts later.
I did find out that we got an edited version - which we always do for sponsors - that cut dialogue, but it was only Elizabeth saying, "You wouldn't dare." And Ross saying he would and so would she. Also Demelza laying in bed with Jeremy, and going to get a candle which is supposed to be symbolic for their relationship.

Well, again, I'm knitting, so I hear her say "You wouldn't dare", but then move toward him with her lips parted (almost like Catherine did with the good doctor, but not in slo mo). Hm.

Yes it was great! And I agree, I am on Dwight's side.

My students said that in the book, there is no doubt left--it´s rape.
And yes, in these days of ¨no means no¨, he should have left.
But that´s judging old times by modern standards.
As for this episode, I see her move toward him and challenge him, getting closer to him, asking him if he has anything to offer her, lips slightly parted (only slightly more subtle than Caroline with the doctor, when he was examining her ¨throat¨¨), That, plus she knows him well, and knows how to push his buttons-which was exactly why she sent him that note when she did. A part of me thought she just wanted one go, to see what it would be like before resigning herself to a life with another she didn´t love. But when he leaves her with that tone of ¨I´ll call you.¨, and she´s hanging out the window, you can tell she´s hooked again. As for the act itself, complicated--but she´s not pushing him away, she´s drawing him in. A bit like that scene in ¨A History of Violence¨, if you´ve seen it. He begins to force himself on her on the stairway, realizes what he´s doing, loosens his grip, but then she makes the next overture. Not the rosy, romantic picture at all-most complicated.

Some believe that because she told him to leave, he should have left.
I guess, from what my students tell me, they've diverged from the way the book was written. Sounds like the original text, the book, was more harsh than the show.
