I think this was a Black Eyed Susan book when I was in middle school in the early 2000s, so it was most likely published somewhere between 2000 and 2005.

I know the main character was a boy, but unfortunately I don't remember any details beyond that. :( I don't think the scene with the dog was connected to the main plot, which makes this very difficult to search for!

Any ideas would be much appreciated. :) That scene has been stuck in my head for all these years, and I'd love to lay this mystery to rest!

Bumping this to say I think I figured out what this book is! I'm pretty sure it's Stand Tall by Joan Bauer. The title sounds really familiar to me, the publication year is about right, and reviews from Booklist and School Library Journal both mention that the main character is worried about his aging dog. I'm ordering a copy from the library just to be on the safe side, but I really think this is it!

The book arrived today, and it's definitely the right one. I was able to flip through and find the scene I remembered right away. So glad to solve the mystery after all these years! :)
