message 112: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Joan - I was reading The Orenda by Joseph Boyden. It was fascinating, but very gruesome and went on a little too long for me. I am not sure that you would like it but it was a well done look at the New World Indians of the time period and at a culture being torn between their beliefs and the French Jesuit's zeal to try to bring Christ to the sauvages, as they called them.

message 113: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I gave The Orenda 4 stars. It was a brutal time in Canada's history, and well worth the read in my opinion. I'm not dissenting with Cherie. It was a rather long read.

Did you read the print version or listen to the audiobook, Cherie? I listened to it.

message 114: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I read the print version. I'm not sure I would have liked it as an audio book, Janice. I gave it three stars. If there were halves, it would be 3 1/2 but it really dragged at the end - for me. I enjoyed the first half better than the last and I was tired of the story by the end. There was so much more that could have been focused on besides the brutality and torture. I understood that this was reality but it was more than I wanted to end with.
