Plot: The book is about a boy who started seeing ghosts after an accident and became friends with one particular ghost who was helpful. After going on a school trip where he met a ghost that made he cry profusely, his parents get him a doctor who is supposed to treat him but tries to force he to help him use his ghost friend cheat on a television show in spinning the wheel. He is able to successfully bring the doctor to justice at the end of the novel.

It's been a while since I read it, but many of the plot details you mentioned reminded me of Golden & Grey: An Unremarkable Boy and a Rather Remarkable Ghost by Louise Arnold.

Gr. 4-6. Misfit ghost Grey Arthur and 11-year-old Tom Golden (a frequent scapegoat of bullies at his new school) share the belief that life is unfair, which somehow magically bonds them together. Arthur becomes Golden’s “invisible friend,” and Tom develops the ability to see ghosts--which contributes to their friendship but causes problems when some Screamers and a Sadness Summoner frighten Tom.
