Inouiim | 1 comments Read this book about 7-8 years ago. A paperback, the cover had some trees and a lake. Predominant color was black. The name i remember of the book was 'The Skeleton Lake' but the is no such book that i could find.
The book had something to do with missing remains of someone from a while back.
The book is set in winter or maybe the area is cold.
The main protagonist (ex-police maybe) is a detective. Mid-thirties. I think it was told in first-person. He is assisted by an older friend of his (or maybe his father's friend-he is that old). He is investigating a case involving missing people or murder.
There is a young high school girl who was the daughter of his colleague or friend. Before the events of the book, the protagonist beat up her stalker/ex-boyfriend very badly for harassing her. The boy was the son of someone influential (maybe). She then developed an unhealthy crush on him. Now having graduated still pursues him.
Somewhere in the book, he is forced off a mountain road into a frozen lake. There was a ramp on the road that caused his car to jump into the lake, I think. He is rescued by his friend who then makes him leave before the cops arrive.
The protagonist goes to his ex-girlfriend's house (she was or is married). She makes him coffee(???). He leaves.
Towards the end of the book, he confronts someone in a forest near the lake or maybe just near the lake. His friend is also there i think he was also involved. Someone had a gun and only the protagonist survives. I think. In the last chapter, the young girl is cleaning his room and finds a photo (don't remember what).
Your help is appreciated.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments There is Skeleton Lake by Mike Doogan. I don't know if the plot fits.

Was this part of a series?

The Draining Lake by Arnaldur Indriðason?

The Draining Lake (Inspector Erlendur #6) by Arnaldur Indriðason

The detective is Icelandic and the series is set in Iceland. The skeleton dates to the Cold War.

Do you remember who the skeleton in your book was - male or female? How recently had they died?
