Andy (_btp) | 311 comments hope posting this in right place
interested to hear if you have a method of managing your To Be Read list - besides reading them.

Decided to take action at start of the year when I realised had probably a decade's worth of reading lined up. Set a limit of 50 and started a cull.
It did prompt me to read some I had forgotten about that I could easily lay my hands on.

Know I'll be under pressure once those best of 2016 lists start appearing

message 2: by Paul (new)

Paul I tend to only add books to my Goodreads TBR if I have bought or preordered it, so as there aren't a million and one books there I'll never actually buy. I keep a seperate wish list and occasionhally cull that.
I have tended to an average of about 80-90 on my TBR for the last number of years and will have a very occassional cull of that

message 3: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments Paul - so wishlist may be longer?

for past while have been on restricted diet regarding buying books (combination of credit card shock and clearing out old office space)
Limiting myself to library, gifts/loans, Gutenberg and Librivox.
Imposes interesting constraints, but does mean some can languish on TBR for a time.

message 4: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I am similar to Paul. I tend only to add books I have ordered or will genuinely buy or ones already on my shelf. My TBR is usually under a hundred. I have no system for working through them, I read what I am in the humour of. The only exception is for Book of the Month or buddy reads.

message 5: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina I must admit I'm a bit more anal about my TBR list than Paul and trelawn. I add books to it that interest me at the time of reading their reviews or recommendations and then at the start of the year I take a list from that pile of books I plan to get through during the year. It doesn't bother me if I don't get through the list and I might change it as the year goes on but I enjoy ticking off books from the list.
I should have been a teacher lol!!!

message 6: by Paul (new)

Paul The wishlist can be long but actually tends to be ok. Preffered authors tend to be bought or preordered as soon as available

message 7: by Andy (last edited Sep 15, 2016 05:27AM) (new)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments I have some that I'm conflicted about, know they would be worth it, but not sure when, if ever, I will give them the attention and time they deserve.

The longest shelved as TBR, since February 2011, is Vegetables For The Irish Garden by Klaus Laitenberger.
An aspirational addition, it will wait until I give more time to reading books and pottering in garden,
just a few decades to retirement

I am terrible about this task, 1345 books on my tbr list. About 1100 are GR giveaway entries. If you put them on the list, you are notified of subsequent giveaways. I have won 16 Goodreads giveaways.

Bookworm with Kids This thread has given me some ideas on how to deal with my TBR pile also! Thanks for the hints, everybody. I seriously need to tackle the number of books I have on my physical shelves at home before my husband threatens to divorce me! Thank God he doesn't see my Goodreads shelves or he really would have a fit!

Paul You just need a bigger house ;-)

Siobhan Quinlan | 18 comments I have set myself a goal to get my tbr to 0 by 2018. Which means im also on a book buying ban and have some rules :) i hope that i can do it

message 12: by Paul (new)

Paul I wouldnt even try as I know I would fail miserably

Bookworm with Kids Paul wrote: "You just need a bigger house ;-)"

I could probably suggest that to the husband.....!

I hope you can do it Siobhan. I noticed that sometimes I add books that I later change my mind about. I will ask myself why I added it.

message 15: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan Quinlan | 18 comments I have sorted my books and donated what i know i wont read. And on my kindle i have started deleting books to try get that number down as well. I have to sort my goodreads shelf next and only have the books i own on a tbr takedown shelf. I have so many its a shame they arent being read :)

Bookworm with Kids Best of Luck with your plans, Siobhan. I should try to join you in the challenge!

message 17: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan Quinlan | 18 comments I have also set myself a target of reading 100 pages a day which is also helping get this tbr done

Thanks :) you should we could keep eachother going :)

message 19: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments Dont stress about. It can be overwhelming but before I joined goodreads I didnt always know what to read. Now the choices are endless! Thats a good thing. :-)

message 20: by Margo (new)

Margo The quality of my reading has surely improved since I joined goodreads. I still get the occasional lemon but at least I can whine about it to an understanding group of people!

SherryRose | 0 comments Haha so true Margo!

message 22: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments this time of year tends to be the worst for me adding to TBR,
10 added so far in November, 4 courtesy of this group.

not sure what a TBR of zero would be like siobhan, a mythical place i feel

message 23: by Paul (new)

Paul I think I like having a TBR more than I would not having one.

message 24: by SherryRose (last edited Nov 21, 2016 06:02AM) (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments Yes it is Paul. When I go to the library, I look at the tbr shelf and I go from there. Once in awhile I pick up a book randomly and it has been fun as well. What fascinates me the most about goodreads is how many new authors there are. I'm also impressed by the authors who offer a q&a on their gr page and how quickly they answer. They're very nice.

message 25: by Margo (new)

Margo I don't think I'd like to have no books on my tbr. My tbr is books I own that I haven't yet read. Be nice to keep it between 50 and 100 but I wouldn't like to see it much lower.

message 26: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments disciplined approach failing since new year, now up to 66 TBR,
will try to keep at 1 year's worth of reading :)

message 27: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments Sometimes I go through the tbr and realize that I've added books I don't actually want to read afterall. I must just add the on impulse.

message 28: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments adding as TBR on impulse better than buying on impulse Sherry :)

message 29: by SherryRose (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I blogged my TBR tag. I have a book buying problem but I might as well celebrate it I suppose.

My tbr list is 1819 books. Books that I have read 1804. I may have to join bookaholics anonymous.

:)

message 33: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 2 comments I will occasionally go through my TBR and use the "Konmari" method on each title. If it doesn't bring me any excitement, I delete the title for now.

message 34: by Maria Hill (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I own 206 books yet to be read (Probably more if you include classics). It will take me three years to read them at my current reading pace. I can quite happily spend hours looking through them all and imaging what stories they contain inside. This by the way is how they found their way to my home in the first place :). If I can't imagine myself reading one - I give it away (I work for a charity that sell books every now and again). So a few have left my shelves that way (tend to be books I have read though).

Unfortunately (fortunately ?) I have run out of space and need to get the pile down to a more manageable 100. So no more book buying (well not at the current rate). I need to find new fun ways to read what I have.

message 35: by Karen (last edited May 14, 2017 03:05PM) (new)

Karen Ireland (book-vixen) I try and source my books in the library and if I cannot I will buy.

I set myself a personal goal for the reading and try clearer some of my own books, but I have over the 12 from the library each month so its hard going :-)

I have gotten so bad I look for the library audiobooks and could have 4 or 5 books on the go at a time.

message 36: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments took my eye off the ball for a few months and TBR has jumped to over 100

the more books I read the faster the TBR pile grows

message 37: by Maria Hill (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I read a book like the author and buy at least two more of their books. :) Then someone says if you like that you will love .. blah and I acquire that.

My Physical TBR is 252, my wish list TBR is 349. I am not allowed to buy anymore books until christmas, unless I travel somewhere and buy them as my souvenier of the trip. So thinking of going to London soon..... :)

message 38: by Ali (new)

Ali (ali909) | 90 comments I am trying to revise my TBR every so often, as I tend to add books on the spur of the moment sometimes. It does not eliminate much, but still helps to actually revisit the books and actually prompts to read some or be more active in that regard (i.e. to order or to buy them, that is more relevant to the classics, as they tend to be the ones "oh, I have to read this some time..." while the new releases seem to be "oh, I have to get this book NOW!!").

I also try not to buy books as much as I used to. I use my library very actively. I also look out for deals on Amazon.
