What does the title of The Daughter of Time refer to????

Nowhere do I see any mention of what the title of this book is about. Does anyone know what it's called that?

It is definitely "truth is the daughter of time" which plays against the theme of the book, which is that Richard III has the bad reputation he has because history is "written by the winners"...and that all these years later, the truth can be told. I think there is also a quote in the book about how truth lies "not in the accounts, but in the account books", meaning that if you are looking for facts, brush away the opinion.One of my favorite books in all the world.

One of my all-time fav. books. Easily in the top ten, or five.
And in spite of numerous books and reports that Richard III was not the villain Shakespeare and King Henry made him out to be, he is still labeled "hunch back murderer".I too re-read "The Daughter of Time" every so often.
Great, genre busting, classic. I read this book over 50 years ago. It remains in my top five, best mystery novels of all time.
Wonderful book. My copy is quite worn and I agree that it is one of the best.
I concur. I believe that it is one of the best ever. And it is completely thought out while Jury lies in bed recovering from an injury, no physical exertion at all.
Richard III is the greatest PR press release ever written. Written by Shakespeare when Elizabeth I was on the throne, it is a brilliant spin that gives legitimacy to Elizabeth's reign. With all the challenges the Virgin Queen faced, the Tudors needed some good spin. The play heroically establishes Henry VII's right to the crown. He was Elizabeth's grandfather.
But Shakespeare being Shakespeare, he couldn't help but create what just may be the greatest villain of all literature. I guess that's why the play worked so well. Talk about the villain you love to hate.
I read Daughter of Time in high school and Tey convinced me Richard was innocent. There actually is a society that advances that belief.
Yes, the Richard the III Society does continue to advocate for him. I read somewhere that by the time of the Tudors, they were aware that much of what was said about Richard was hogwash, yet it persisted anyway.
The title refer to a quote from Francis Bacon: "Truth is the daughter of time, not of authority" and that goes well with the story.I read the book a long time ago, but it is still with me. For those who are interested I recommend "The Sunne in Splendor" by Sharon Penman which is the same topic but covering both Edward and Richard.

I was about to make the same recommendation. "The Sunne in Splendor" is excellent.

Did anyone ever answer the question that started this stream? The title is a reference to a quotation originally attributed to Francis Bacon: "Truth is the daughter of time, not of authority." The phrase has since been paraphrased and quoted by many other famous men (And perhaps some women too!) Notable among these secondary sources are Johannes Kepler and Abraham Lincoln.
The answer to the question is that the detective had time on his hands due to his injury and the enforced time off from work. He was trapped in bed and needed something to occupy his mind.:> Maggie Foster

I loved this book. Just happened to have it on my shelves and needed a mystery for the March challenge. After I read it and finished the March Mystery reading challenge, I was looking for a book on my shelves with a red cover for a prompt in the OWLS challenge and discovered I had The Sunne in Splendour! Happy coincidence. Read it and loved it as well!
