I love this challenge! I started reading YA last year because I wanted to read the book before the movie. I read the Beautiful Creatures series and loved it but I didn't care for the movie...that's the way it goes many times.

I don't know who was coaching them on the Louisiana lifestyle and language, but it came across as a parody. I couldn't get through half of it before turning it off. My husband and his family are from Louisiana, and though they suck crawfish heads (ewww!) they are not laughable like those portrayed in the movie. Sadly, I would think that kind of thing, a poorly executed movie, could be detrimental for the book(s).
I've read The Fault in our Stars and loved it. Can't wait to discuss it.
I just got it on audiobook and have listened to the first disc. It's pretty good so far...I admit, I haven't been the hugest John Green fan (I know, I'm a freak of nature or something), but so far, so good.
I'm not exactly a John Green fan either, and I don't usually care for that type of book. But I did like The Fault in Our Stars for some reason. It was a moving story, and I read it early enough that it hadn't developed so much buzz, so I was surprised by the ending. Slightly surprised. I figured it out as I went along, but it wasn't what I was expecting so I liked that.
When I first heard of this, I thought it sounded just like "A Walk to Remember."
The audio reader is really good. I'm enjoying it.
Who's going to the movie?

Isn't it. And I'm normally not that kind of reader. But I read this because it was a book club choice and I was so drawn in. Absolutely loved Augustus.
I think the narrator is great for the audio version too.
I really want to see the movie, but I'll wait for the DVD to come out when I can watch it at home and pause when I need to.

I just finished. Kind of knew the story ahead of time, and wish I hadn't. I liked it way better than Looking for Alaska.
No, but I saw a strange article posted on a FB page the other day about people being angry at John Green for writing such a sad story. They were seriously cursing him out. My first thought was that it must have been bogus, but I couldn't find anything one way or another. Can people be that stupid? I mean to read/watch something that is so obviously going to be a tear jerker!
We love sad stories. However, I advise not seeing the movie surrounded by teen girls. They were still crying in the parking lot. I held it together, though...most of the time.

I'm a little scared to see the movie so close to reading the book. Usually that makes me hate the movie.
I thought the book was a little better, mostly because the movie Gus wasn't quite the larger-than-life character of the book. For the most part, though, it was quite good.
I haven't read the book yet, but I saw the movie. I thought it was cute and corny, in a good way. It made me want to read the book more. According to my friend who read the book a couple weeks ago, "there were a couple of changes, but it stayed true to the book for the most part."
It is super sad, but the producers used a couple of tricks that made it sadder than the book. Like the scene where Hazel wakes up with severe pain and they do a slowmo of mom running into the room. Every parent's nightmare, so you know the moms in the audience were sobbing. The book wasn't quite as sad, and I don't think Green wanted it to be. We expected a death from the beginning and Green showed how these kids handle it. To me, the book was more a celebration of life, knowing that some of us are given "shorter infinities" than others. The visit to the Anne Frank house was no accident. Another life cut unfairly short, but anyone familiar with Anne's story knows she never felt sorry for herself. It was great symbolism that stood out more in the book.
Here's my review for the book.

Still waiting for the movie to come to the cheap theater...they just got Divergent, so they are a bit behind. But thinking I'll go see that while it's out.

I just saw the movie today. And...it was not good.
I turned to my sister 5 minutes in and said, "Is this a terrible movie or is it my imagination?"
She said, "Just wait, maybe it will get better."
Sadly, it didn't. Sorry, I like the book a lot but the movie was painful.

So,I'm a little bit late for this, but I wanted to comment anyway since I finished the book about two weeks ago. I saw the movie first with a couple of friends and even thought I didn't care about all the hype going around for the book, I liked it and even shed a few tears in the end. I decided to read the book, despite knowing what happened already. And I disliked it, a lot. Is so existentialist it hurts. Hazel is the typical im-not-like-other-girls type and I'm so not into that. I found Gus thoroughly annoying and most off the times I was just rolling my eyes at him. It was disappointing. This is one of the few times I'll choose the movie adaptation over the original work and honestly it kinda ruined John Green for me.
I had the opposite reaction. The book was a little cheesy but the movie killed it for me. Hearing the dialogue spoken aloud made me roll my eyes. And the chemistry was nonexistent for me. I cringed when they kissed! Lol..,

For any month with a book- turned-movie coming out, we will try to read the book. Bonus--see the movie.
June is obvious, with The Fault in Our Stars coming out. That will be our challenge book for June.
