YA book? orphan girl who transforms into a dragon. can hear voices from metals and gems.

Starts with an orphan girl who people think is crazy because she hears voices from walls. it's set in late 1800s or early 1900s. there is a war going on. her orphanage is destroyed and she has to move, but is picked to be a special student at a prestigious school on an island. she soon finds out she can turn to vapor and travel. she also falls in love with a boy who can turn things to gold by touching them and talks to the stars.

there is a lot more to the plot but it would be all spoilers. I can say tho that the people who transform into dragons are known to be extinct. there are only two known dragons at the end of the book. I believe it's a series but I really don't remember!

found it! called the sweetest dark. it's a 3 part series, highly recommend!
