Week 1: Demons
Date: 31/5/14

Well, it took me forever to read this book, just like the first one in the series. I think its because I'm just not buying the H/h relationships. They don't seem to connect with each other to any great depth. Just the usual lust, fated mates type stuff, there doesn't seem to be any other connection, they don't even seem to like each other. Probably doesn't help that the 2 male leads so far have been incubi.

So Shade, is the cursed brother of the first books hero, and a paramedic at the Underground Hospital. Runa is an ex girlfriend, who is now part of the military special ops team, sent to find out about the Hospital and is now a shapeshifter since last seen by Shade.

The mysterious other brother who was assumed dead, Roag, isn't and he's pissed! So lots of kidnapping, torture, death, organ-harvesting, and general nastiness later, Shade's curse kicks in. He starts to fade because he's fallen "in love" with Runa.

Not saying any more cause of spoilers but did enjoy some of the demon sayings "demonphobia" and "demonitarian mission to save ..."

I've got the rest of the series so I'm hoping it improves.

Kimberly (gravy) | 530 comments Sandra, yeah I guess Fury was just one of those that didn't resonate with me. A friend of mine talked it up so much that I wanted to try it out. Oh well, you win some and you lose some.
I'm ready for the next shelf! And it looks like we are going to get a stamp for Demons! Woo Hoo!
Go Squirrels!

Lord's Fall by Thea Harrison
Shelf #2 ~ 25/5/14: 'Shifter'
Date finished: 5/26/14
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:

Well, actually 4 1/2 stars! I picked up Lord's Fall on a special sale a while back, but still hadn't read/purchase all the ones up to it. I seem to go in spurts on this series, enjoy it a lot, then stall when I have to get out and purchase them. Then Bingo starts...and this is a great series (widely shelved, colorful covers!)

Now to the book. Focus is once again on Pia & Dragos. I had/have forgotten what her were-form is (someone feel free to PM me or put it in spoilers on the thread!), though some of her abilities were called upon throughout the course of the story. She's off to smooth things over with the Elves, and Dragos is staying in New York to preside over the games to choose two sentinels, and confirm that the current ones are up to continuing. They are struggling to find a balance in their relationship/partnership, though they've come a long way. It's especially hard for Dragos though, because not only Pia, but also the "peanut" are going into what he considers "hostile" territory. However, the stakes quickly escalate as Pia gets caught up in the fray when the elves find themselves in trouble from something that should have been lost/tossed eons before. This results in a somewhat tense alliance between the weyr and the elves...and...well...lots of excitement and tense moments until the satisfactory end of the story!

I enjoyed seeing Pia on her own with her bodyguards, and loved the pace of the story. Actually, I quite like all the characters, and am very looking forward to reading the harpy's story next!

For those of you who don't know, Heidi is half Fae & half wolf. Her 'One True Thing' mate is Robson (Bridge) Trowbridge, Alpha of the Creemore pack.

In the previous 2 books, much world-building has been had, and much action has happened in both Thrall, the Fae world of nightmares, and Canada, where the Creemore pack resides. This one starts just hours after the previous book ended, when Bridge comes back from Merenwyn (Fae).

This book continues the theme that Heidi & Bridge spend most of the book apart, as every little thing happens to separate them. But the bikers trying to kidnap her whilst she & Bridge are trying to find a way to get to Merenwyn to rescue her twin brother Lexie, have her making promises left, right and centre, to all the wrong people.

It was a pleasure to finally see Heidi begin to grow up in this book, willing to take responsibility for her actions. To reason out the best strategy to keep as many people safe as she could and to take drastic action when that was needed.

Really looking forward to the next phase of rescue Lexi & kill the Black Mage and don't want to have to wait till next March.

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 540 comments Spell Bound (Women of the Otherworld, #12) by Kelley Armstrong

Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong
Shelf: Yellow/Orange Cover
Date Finished: 6/2/14
Rating: ★★★

I have to admit Savannah is not my favorite protagonist in this series. I really liked her as a side character but she's not really doing it for me as the lead. This book builds off the events of the previous book and off of events earlier in the series. It was a little bit of a memory exercise for me at times, trying to remember some of those plot lines. Armstrong does a good job of prodding the memory but I have to admit that some of the events are a little more vague for me than they should be.

Savannah struggles with maturity in this book and that's not my favorite plot line either. She is only 21 so her struggles made sense for her character, it's just a personal thing that I prefer older protagonists. She's shaping up by the end of the book and I think it's fitting to her character that it's no-BS Clay and Cassandra who have the most positive impact on her attitude. I really liked the time that Savannah and Cassandra spent together, they had some nice sparring dialogue. Basically all of the previous characters show up in at least a cameo here. It's nice to see everyone but I wish I hadn't watched the TV series of Bitten because now I have weird mash up in my head of how I pictured the werewolves previously and who played them on TV. That's certainly not Kelley Armstrong's fault though. Now that we know this is the next to the last book everyone showing up makes sense to tie up the series.

So while it's easy for me to slip back into this world and I did enjoy this book, it reads very much like the middle of a trilogy. Especially the end, it just kind of ended. Not so much a cliffhanger but it didn't really seem like any of the plot was resolved either. So, while this book was a fine read it's far from my favorites in the series. I'll certainly read Thirteen to see how it all wraps up but the series seems to be ending on a weaker note than it started on for me.

How and why could Satan be a favorite character?
Theresa spends the book trying to get out of a contract with Satan. I was caught up with her and Zeke trying to figure out how not to kill one another while trying to set everything straight. I think the fact that I didn't have to think too much while reading this is what's making it hard for me to write a review that doesn't sound like, "this was cool. read it."
There were some twists in the there that I didn't see coming. I need to see what's really going to happen with Iris and Satan! I wonder if Jerome is going to really shake things up.
This had everything I needed in a book: fun, funny, quick read, likable main characters, great side characters, and I want to see what happens to them in the next few books.

Review:
OMG!! I think this one is my favorite of the series. Action and intrigue throughout the whole book.

I love Kate's character and the way that she is written. Her snarky internal dialogue had me laughing out loud and she can back it up with her badassness. Curran has always been sort of "eh" for me and I have to say that at times I wanted to run him through with a sword just like Kate but in the end I like that he is imperfect and flawed in his love for Kate; just as she is for him.

The story involves Kate, Curran and crew heading to Europe to try and get the panacea that will ward off loupism in children. In exchange they are to be bodyguards for a wolf pack princess who is pregnant (by two shapeshifters) and everyone is fighting over.

Of course nothing goes easy for Kate (or Curran) and the two are thrust into a spiderweb of intrigue that is a roller coaster ride up to the very end. This is one emotional and drama laden book but well worth the effort.

Thoughts:

Aryal: sentinel, harpy and all-around kick-*ss female

Of course, her HEA was in the works, but who would be the male who could be her guy? After Lord's Fall, it wasn't a surprise, but was curious to see how the extreme anti-love the two were feeling could be turned around.

Well, Dragos throws them out in disgrace on a scouting mission with sparks flying...that morph into a fairly different type of sparks in due time. They make a great pair, and it was a fun, rolicking read with an unexpected, and hard-to-take-out baddie. Very enjoyable read!

Looking forward to the next of Elder Races!!

(It's past midnight, so technically morning...) Bingo, shmingo...if it doesn't fit the shelf, it doesn't matter...reading that as soon as it gets in my hands. Though a lot has been happening to keep it out of my hands...

What to do? Wine and lurk, even though I know there won't be a shelf for hours...or wine then go charge my account and make sure there's enough for two books if SOW doesn't fit the shelf...but could I hold off reading until the announcement???
