Troubletail | 16 comments The series followed several generations of a family who have the ability to sense the health of the people they touch. They can feel the life flowing out of a dying person, even if their patient seems outwardly stable; I'm not sure, but I think they may also be able to tell where in the body the problem was. There are a few scattered fantastical elements in the books such as charms and talismans that seem to actually work, but otherwise the family's ability is the only supernatural element.

The first book was set in medieval Europe and had a male protagonist, the second followed a man and his half Native American son in 19th-century America, and the third had a female protagonist and took place in approximately modern times.

The books which I was thinking of were the Cole Family trilogy by Noah Gordon: The Physician, Shaman, and Matters of Choice.

I remembered that my mother gave me the trilogy after reading it herself, and when I mentioned them to her yesterday, she was able to recall the titles.
