I AM LOOKING FOR A BOOK ON.........?
I am looking for a book on the religious/social history of Japan; ex. Shinto; Buddism. Just spent 3 weeks there and would like to learn more. Thanks!
by Ian Reader(no photo)Although this may not give you as much history as you desire, this book traces the importance on the various religions in Japan and their societal effects. It may be of interest to you.....I hope so.
Thanks for the suggestion, Tom. 2500 years of history to catch up on! I was in Nara where they were celebrating a 1300 annual festival. Hard to grasp any function that has been practiced for so long.
Hi FolksI am looking for a recommendation for a good readalbe english biography of Willy Brandt - the ex-mayor of Berlin
Any ideas or thoughts.
Thanks much
vince
Vince, this is the right place. I am sure that the other Assisting Mods and group members may have some better ideas.
But since Willy was a prolific author; we have to add the author citation. And there was a wonderful photo of him too.
Willy Brandt
Folks, Vince needs some assistance finding a great biography of Brandt in English. Hope some of you have some good ideas.

I'm getting ready for my annual trip to Argentina and Chile. Any recomendations on good books about the history of either country? I go down almost every year, but have not read much about that part of the world.
Have you read anything about Eva Peron......it certainly is not a complete history of Argentina but covers one of the most important times in the life of the country.
by Alicia Dujovne Ortiz
I have not read a Biogrophy on Evita, but do know a bit about her, great suggestion! I have visited her tomb in La Recoleta, which was an amazing place to see. The architecture and sculpture on the tombs was truly something to behold.
I can just imagine what it must be like.........it appears that she was practically a candidate for sainthood. An interesting and complex woman.
I am looking for books about Spanish Colonial Florida, particularly the 1700s when Spanish Florida was in conflict with the British colonies.I know Queen Annie's War saw the destruction of the Spanish mission system and a siege of St Augustine in 1702. The War Of Jenkins Ear saw another siege of St Augustine in 1740 by Oglethorpe and a Spanish counteroffensive into Georgia in 1742.
Thanks Jill & Bryan for the book suggestions for Willy Brandt - the one is listed only on Amazaon as a $40 paperback and the other as a used 89 cents hardbound.I will look in the library and see what I can get.
Thanks very much
Hi I am now in need to read something on Egyptian history my mom keeps saying that Cleopatra never had any kids but the book
by
Michelle Moranis saying different. I'm either looking on biography of Cleopatra or an actual book that could give me hints on Egyptian history of rulers.lets say from Nefertiti to a few rulers after Cleoptra's rule. Just on Ancient Egypt not like a whole history. I hope i'm not too confusing.
by Nicolas GrimalThis book may be something you want to read as it covers each reign up until the conquest by Alexander the Great. Hope this helps.
Cleopatra was after Alexander from the way I'm reading the book mentioned above. So i'm looking up to Cleopatra and one after her reign whoever that was.
Sorry....I misunderstood....I was back in the Imhotep times. Hmmmmm, I will have to think about books from the period of your interest.
Hi Krystal, Cleopatra certainly did have a child. I have copy of this book at home but have not read it yet but it has received some very good reviews and should offer everything and more that you’re looking for:
by Toby Wilkinsondescription:
This is a story studded with extraordinary achievements and historic moments, from the building of the pyramids and the conquest of Nubia, through Akhenaten's religious revolution, the power and beauty of Nefertiti, the glory of Tutankhamun's burial chamber, and the ruthlessness of Ramesses, to Alexander the Great's invasion, and Cleopatra's fatal entanglement with Rome. As the world's first nation-state, the history of Ancient Egypt is above all the story of the attempt to unite a disparate realm and defend it against hostile forces from within and without. Combining grand narrative sweep with detailed knowledge of hieroglyphs and the iconography of power, Toby Wilkinson reveals Ancient Egypt in all its complexity.
Krystal, just ask Rick (smile).
Surely he'll come up with something he has stacked away in his library somewhere.
Amazing!

Hello all!I recently moved to France and I'm searching for two topics - overall French History and overall European history. What I'm after is broad-stroke overviews to help me learn the lay of the land, so to speak. From there, I can drill down on specific interests as they arise.
I realize that both topics are very large, so multi-volume series are okay. Another possibility is general periods of French and/or European history. For example, "pre-revolutionary France", or "Europe during the renaissance", and so on.
I'm at the beginning of a big reading period as I adjust to my new country/continent, so overviews to get me started, then details later.
Thanks!
Jim
Jim, with the caveat that I have not read any of the following, they are all on my to-read list and might be ones that you would consider. It is entirely possible that most of them were recommended by other members of this club so am sure people will chime in with other recommendations.

by Andrew Husseythese are about more specific events rather than general history but you might find them of interest:

These all look pretty good. I'm especially drawn to the Liebling book - as my waistline can attest to... LOL!
Hi Jim, some excellent recommendations by Alisa there, you could also consider these titles by a British author who writes very well on French history:

During the Hundred Years war, the French occupied Beynac and the British Castelnaud, essentially making the Dordogne the border between France and England. Or so the guides explained to me...
As I'm typing this, I realize maybe my first 'detailed' history book should be about the Hundred Years war.
Oh and you might actually find a French version of this book somewhere. The translated/English version was excellent and I learned a bit about France during the WWII occupation through this woman's story. Again, specific content rather than general history, but I found it very compelling.

Jim,Penguin has been releasing books over the last few years, or more, covering relatively broad periods of European history. The series is aptly, if uncreatively, titled Penguin History of Europe. Most have gotten rather good reviews. I believe there are gaps in time, but depending upon how far back you want to go, one of the more recent ones was on the classical period:
by Simon PriceOthers in the series are:
by Chris Wickham
by William Chester Jordan
by Tim Blanning (This one was particularly well-received.)On the post-1945 period (published by Penguin, but I'm not sure if it's technically part of the series):

Tony Judt
Hi Jim, aaah, the Hundred Years War, a good subject. This book offers a nice concise history in one book:
by Desmond SewardBut for an excellent and very detailed history of this period could I suggest the following three books by Jonathan Sumption.

Jim....you gave us a broad subject......but for the ultimate book for the period of the rise of Nazi Germany and how it affected Europe, I must recommend:

Thank you Alisa, Brant, Rick and Jill! These should definitely give me a good foundation for my reading.
This post from June, a member, has been moved from another threadCan anyone recommend some survey books on Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon Britain? I just need to get a general idea of the time period for an Independent Studies course I am taking. Thanks so much!
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find some books about British history (maybe even some about Wales, Ireland and Scotland also). Any book on any country or period would be helpful, I just want to be get a little familiar with UK history since I'll be studying abroad in London this Fall.I've already started a bit into "The Story of Britain" by Rebecca Fraser and I've already read "Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey, which I really enjoyed. Does anyone have any suggestions for books I can read to familiarize myself with British history or what events in British history you find especially intriguing to read about?

There's a book by Robert Lacey called "Great Tales from English History: true stories about the extraordinary people who made Britain great" its about $12 on amazon. That way you will know about those countries greatest heroes.

Liza Picard's "Victorian London" & "Elizabeth's London" should give you a nice background of how the city was & came to be. Also Edward Rutherford has a huge book simply titled "London" that, while its fiction, takes place from the beginning of its creation all the way into modern London w/ all the important events going on in the background. Daniel pool has a book titled "what Jane Austen ate & Charles Dickens knew" daily facts about life in the 19th century. That should get you started! Good luck....Im jealous.
Awesome. Don't forget to cite your books and authors:
Alison Weir
Robert Lacey
Thomas Cahill
Liza Picard
Edward Rutherfurd
Daniel Pool
You might want to visit the club's British history thread cited below and browse through the topics. There are some great books listed there that might catch your attention.http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...
