Would any of you have recommendations for books based around the Palestine/Israel conflict, the history that brought them to where they are today basically. I'm finding it difficult to track down a non-biased account and would really like to learn more about the subject.
Many thanks
Jo

"I want to read "The History of the World
J. M. Roberts" but without Westad. Someone might send me a pdf edition.
Thank you.

Thanks Jill, much appreciated!

Hello, fellow goodread users! I'm new to this place, so let me introduce myself. My name is Dmitry, I'm from Russia, and my knowledge of history of United States of America is far from ideal. As is my talking English, and I'm deeply sorry for the latter - though I have no problems understanding the written text.
School history course was shallow and long-forgotten, information from historical fiction books & films is fragmentary and, well, fiction is fiction! For today I am not specifically interested in one age, or person, or problem of the USA history, and what I really need is a good comprehensive work that is non-american-reader-friendly. And, as far as I see, this is the best place to ask!
Any suggestions?

Dimitri from Belgium seconds this question. I have not read it myself yet, but this one-volume history is notably considered by Goodreads reviewers to be particularly accessible to non-Americans and is written by an outsider of Cambridge repute.

Can anybody help out Jack? - JACK I HAVE MOVED YOUR REQUEST HERE?
I have an ancestor who fought in the battle of Hastings and I am planning on writing a historical fiction series on the Anglo Saxons/Vikings/Scandinavians before the battle of Hastings and leading into the battle. I am struggling finding some research materials for this time period. Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas? Thanks.

Volume 1 is a really good general survey of early Britain with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

If you are looking for a book about U.S. policy and how we got in the war in the first place, David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest is the place to begin.

Could anyone recommend me a good non-fiction book that covers the “rise and fall” of ancient Greece? ¨
I’m looking for something similar too:

"I''ve been struggling to find a book that focuses on the oldest Borgia brother, Giovanni Borgia (Juan). I am assuming there is not one only about him, but if someone could recommend a book where he is somewhat largely discussed, I would appreciate it. "

im looking for a book we used in AP american history from '97 or '98 for essays. each week you had to write a paper on an article. it was a narrative history type book. chrono order. there was one piece by bart de las casas. john smith and i think , one from ben franklin about how he tried his hardest to be completely virtuous and it didnt workout for him. if i remember correctly it was a small to medium sized book. perhaps black was on the cover and back with an old map on the cover. thin paper. maybe 200-300 pages. the main textbook we used for that class has this yellowish color with a map and i believe a native american on the front . greatly appreciate any help. thanks

When mentioning a book, you have to put a proper citation, to make it easier for other members to access it. The format is as follows:

Hi, I'm interested in this subject the War of the Roses. Could you give me some advice about what books to read to know more about this interesting period?
To be more precise I want to know more about the different political issues, the battles, the different sides, the badges of each family ....
Currently I'm reading this book Stormbird by Conn Iggulden.
Thanks !!!!
Jose

"Hi I was wondering if anyone had an recommendations for a book on Saldin. I would really like to read a single book on him. Because I am only planning on reading one book on him I would like it to be at least moderately extensive. I'm looking for a book that covers his military career , piety , family background , faults and strengths. I would also prefer that it wasn't to biased , because the main reason I want to read a book on him is I want to figure out for my self if he was an admirable military man. So far as I know he was a competent and compassionate man which to me seems a good reason to learn more about the man , or if it so happens that he did have some major faults I would like to know about them also. I am not very familiar with Islam or the middle east (being a third generation Canadian). I have read one book on the crusades (which sparked this interest) and one on Jerusalem. Finally if the book mentions some of the key points of the crusades I would like that as well , but I would consider that more of a bonus. "

I am looking for recommendations on factual, objective biographies about Antonio de Oliviera Salazar, Benito Mussolini and Francisco Franco. Given the current shift towards the extreme right in the US and Europe, I wanted to understand these two dictators and how they rose to power. I have been told that both were FAR more intelligent than Hitler and both had ambiguous backgrounds before their commitments to fascism. Also, it is bewildering to me that both still are very, very popular in large swaths of Portguese, Italian and Spanish collective memory respectively despite their long running oppressive dictatorships in the cases of Salazar and Franco. It may be important to understand this in order to decrypt the American fascination with Trump, the BREXIT vote, the persistence of Vlaam Bloch in Belgium and the Front National in France, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Fino

Don't suppose anyone here can recommend a good book about the English class system? My mother has been living here for forty years but still doesn't fully get distinctions such as 'lower middle class' and 'upper middle class', or 'upper middle class' and 'upper class'... I've tried explaining it to her but it's actually quite difficult to describe!
I was thinking of getting her a book about it for Xmas, maybe nothing too heavy, more of a light-hearted look but with a serious edge to it.
Any suggestions would be more than welcome.
One of these might be:

Julian Fellowes
This is fictional book however.

I've been scouring the internet looking for an Atlas of World History. Or would a Timeline version be better? I think I'm aiming for a bird's eye view more than minute details. Feel free to suggest other history related reference books that you love :) They are always fun to learn about.
I checked out these two so far:

and

Biblio - these are our required citation formats.
by Patrick O'Brien (no photo)
by John Haywood (no photo)

Biblio - there are many and I am not sure what you are looking for. I would suggest to go to the thread on the topic you are interested in and there will be wonderful books listed.
As far as atlases go - here is another excellent one:

Sorry to use the wrong formatting. I fixed it :)

As far as atlas..."
I'm looking for a good World History Atlas that would be a good reference book. One that I can keep in my library for years to come. I'd like to be able to see the world 'at that time.' Some thematic maps could be of key events like the Silk Roads from a bird's eye view.
I'm looking for a recommendation for a good atlas. It's been tedious to search online, websites don't share enough of the contents (Table of Contents, Sample Pages) to get a sense of the information and how it's displayed. I'm hoping word of mouth is the way to go.
The John Hayward one shows the world and it's simply colored in to show the empire/dynasty that was in power where and when. The Patrick O'Brian one is a mix of encyclopaedic information and various types of history maps.

Excellent Biblio - thank you so very much for your cooperation in helping maintain our rules and guidelines and helping our group take advantage of the powerful goodreads software - I am going to have Betty - one of our admins in training help you with citations in message 915 - don't worry you will get there - you are doing well already. I am not sure that I have a good recommendation for you other than the one that I made. Maybe some of other members might be able to help you out.

Looking for a good book that puts the Fourth Crusade in the context of the Latin Massacre and other events in the declining East-West relationship. Any recommendations?

I'm just popping in to give a little assistance with formatting of your posts and citations. It takes a little time to get used to the format we use here, but it is well worth it in order to make your posts more readable, and to use the Goodreads software to it's fullest!
Whenever you post here on the HBC, and your post refers to a book, you will need to citate the book. There are a few exceptions to that rule, but those exceptions would be clearly written in that particular thread.
In this "My Books and I" thread, in message 915, your last paragraph is stated as:
"The John Hayward one shows the world and it's simply colored in to show the empire/dynasty that was in power where and when. The Patrick O'Brian one is a mix of encyclopaedic information and various types of history maps."
You would need to reword that to something like this:
I found the two reference books listed below, however I am unsure whether they will meet my needs.

Hopefully I chose the atlases you were referring to ...however you get the idea. Just keep your citations separate from your text!
I hope this helps. Please try editing message 915 as I have explained above.

Still a go-to 'coat-hanger' in my spare time.

This book still (1992) seems to be the most-often used source on both the Latin Massacre and the Fourth Crusade:

Older (1968) but very much within these parameters is :
Byzantium Confronts the West, 1180-1204 (no cover) by Charles M. Brand (no photo)

It's just a historiographic interpretation of Wikipedia, but may it be helpful.

Hi Dimitri,
I think my mom had these back in the day! If they are the same ones, they would be a great reference. They are classics and pretty thrifty compared to the colored ones. Thanks for the recommendation.
