I am looking for some suggestions on two particular Kennedy topics. Since the plethora of books published about the assasination at the end of last year, I've noted so many delve into pet theories and conspiracy again and again.
I am looking for a comprehensive and well written overview of the Kennedy assasination - not conspiratorial, but addressing them is fine. "
I am also looking for an comprehensive overview of the Cuban Missle Crisis (also not conspiratorial) if anyone has any suggestions.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and the reason why you like the book.

"I can't recommend any books, but I do know a little about the history of the Jews in Poland. We were invited there as merchants by Prince Casimir in the 11th century (??). Jews at the time made a pun on the word "Poland," saying "Poh lin," which in Hebrew means, "Here we will sleep." In other words, they believed it would be a safe and peaceful place to endure the exile, and for the next few centuries, we did live in peace and prosperity. Then came Chmilnitzki's peasant revolt in the 1600's, and it was all downhill from there, eventually all going up in flames in the seven (??) concentration camps there.

There are books to corroborate all this, but mostly I learned it from the audio lectures of

I confess that I was less impressed with the Morris biography of Roosevelt. I only read the first volume but chose not to read the rest. It's been some time since I read it, but I recall that I was disappointed at the inclusion of dialogue that nobody could have recorded. I've run into "popular historians" who try too hard to make their books read like novels for a larger, mass audience. I'm not fond of that trend. There are plenty of historians who write very readable books without resorting to gimmicks. Just my opinion.

Dave........I read a book a couple of months ago which included a plethora of dialogue to which the author could not have possibly been privy, even with the most scholarly research. You can see how impressed I was since I can't even remember the title!! So I have to agree with you totally on the "history as novel" approach. I have not read the Roosevelt books, so can't speak to those books. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Jill. Thanks for the comment. I considered adding the book and author citations, but decided to avoid clutter since they're all right there above my post. I thought it might be overkill, but if it's the policy to repeat them no matter what, even back to back, I'll remember that for the future. I suppose we aren't exactly wasting paper, but it does feel like wasted effort.

I devoured the Time Life WWII books as a kid and as an adult I picked up both that series and the American Civil war series, along with several Epic of Flight and Old West books by Time Life.
My son is 10 and I'd like to get him started in history but looking for a similar series to Time Life that provides a general, non-academic, overview for the American Revolution and period of US History up until Civil War. I realize photos wouldn't be available but I am sure a series with plenty of paintings/cartoons/illustrations would suffice.
Any suggestions?

Morning Jill - this actually sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock movie called "Sabotage" from the 1940's. The only book I can find through Bing search is a novel written 1939. Perhaps if you research Hitchcock's movies it may lead to the original book. Hope that helps you. Good luck, Karen
