Kathryn posted:Does anyone have a recommendation for a book about the Kingdom of Sicily? It keeps popping up the the books I'm reading but only as a fringe discussion and I'd like to know more.
Thanks!
I was wondering if anyone had a specific translation or edition of "The Epic of Gilgamesh" that they would recommend, and why? I would also like an edition that includes footnotes, and additional information if possible. Thank you!
You might try this book on Gilgamesh, Whitney. It is very in-depth and might have the information that you are seeking.

Tyler asks: What biography would you recommend for late 19th to early 20th Century?Let's leave out books about Lincoln though.
Could be anything but please only if you've read the book. I know how to use google. Thanks.
Here are the responses:Peter:
The Great Dissent is a wonderful book about how free speech came to be. It is mostly about 1919, but covers earlier years. Briefly, it shows how Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes' dissent in Abrams v. US led to a huge expansion of free speech and details how Holmes came to make that dissent, which was contrary to opinions he had written just a year earlier. Intellectual history at its finest.
by Norman Mattoon Thomas (no photo)Mr Speaker! is an excellent biography of Tom Reed, speaker of the House and a much more important man than his reputation (before reading the book I had never even heard of him)

From Craig:Without a doubt the best biography I've read in recent years over this time period is Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Medicine, Madness and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. As you'll see if you click the Goodreads link, it's all about the murder of James Garfield, a President who I began to greatly admire after reading this terrific book.
There are other biographies I've really enjoyed covering the time period you're questioning, but no bio I've read in recent years compares as well to Ms. Millard's outstanding book.

I'm reading Annette Gordon-Reed's "The Hemingses of Monticello," which details the personal journeys of the women, slave and free, in Thomas Jefferson's world. It's fascinating and well-researched.
This request from Saku was moved from another thread."Hi gang. Just finished reading Cullen Murphy's book on the Inquisition: "God's Jury." While I found the book disappointing, I was left with a feeling of wanting to know more, in particular about the functioning of the Inquisition as an organization. Can you recommend anything? Thanks! Saku"

Gods, Graves, and Scholars
by C.W. CeramSynopsis:
C.W. Ceram visualized archeology as a wonderful combination of high adventure, romance, history and scholarship, and this book, a chronicle of man's search for his past, reads like a dramatic narrative. We travel with Heinrich Schliemann as, defying the ridicule of the learned world, he actually unearths the remains of the ancient city of Troy. We share the excitement of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter as they first glimpse the riches of Tutankhamen's tomb, of George Smith when he found the ancient clay tablets that contained the records of the Biblical Flood. We rediscover the ruined splendors of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient wold; of Chichen Itza, the abandoned pyramids of the Maya: and the legendary Labyrinth of tile Minotaur in Crete. Here is much of the history of civilization and the stories of the men who rediscovered i

I am hoping someone here can help me. I am looking for biographies about historical LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, etc.) people, they don't have to be self-identified since the labels didn't exist through most of our history but something like a biography on Michelangelo that doesn't deny his homosexuality.I am also looking for anything with information regarding shield walls. It could be either ancient or medieval, doesn't matter. I'd love to know from weapons used to battle strategies and everything in between. I'm reading a few historical fiction books that have the main characters participate battles in shield walls and I would love to have some historical facts to add to those experiences.
Please and thank you!
Thanks! The first one went onto the top of my list. I've been debating whether to read Middlesex or not, I've heard mixed reviews about it.
I was looking for a recommendation on Greek military history.Specifically, armor, weapons, gear, seige engines and any other types of weapons Alexander the Great's army may have used. Some of the weapons are described in his biographies but their not usually very detailed.I was looking for a more complete list.
