Judy, terrific suggestion. This is an outstanding book and very informative. I heard Sheryl WuDunn speak and she was amazing.

Mikey, if this is the case, you might be better served by reference books to start you out. They should have a bibliography. Large public libraries and university libraries should carry:

One more and I'll leave you alone. :-)
From the podcast I listen to regularly (New Books in History):
by Niamh Reilly(no photo)"It’s a great introduction to the subject, and it’s full of smart analysis for people who are already familiar with the movement. If you want a guide through the alphabet soup of UN treaties, international conferences, and NGOs relating to women, this is a good place to look. But more importantly, it’s also a succinct overview of the big issues: violence against women, reproductive health, armed conflict, development, and the impact of religious fundamentalisms."

Here are two that might be of interest to you Sean. The second is not for the faint of heart!!

Witch-Hunt: Mysteries of the Salem Witch TrialsI highly recommend this book if you are curious about the known facts of the Salem Witch Trials between February 1692 and May 1693 in colonial Massachusetts. Nineteen were hung, one was pressed to death and another fifty confessed to being witches and so were not executed. It is a YA book, but it is clear, informative and not childish.

Hey all, I'm looking for good books, preferably not novels or historical fiction, about the various Plantagenet women. Any suggestions? I keep having people suggest smutty novels, and I'm really looking for biographies or histories.

Hi,
I'm actually looking for a book for my mother. What I need is a comprehensive, but easily readable book on the history of United States. My mother has lived here in the US for more than 30 years now, but she was born in Chile, and as such never had the opportunity to actually study and appreciate US history in school. She wants to fill in her knowledge gap and I'd love to buy her something that will remedy the situation.

Joy Hakim's A History of Us series is a very reader-friendly guide to American history although it's not a one-volume book - there are actually ten books in the series. But you could try one in the series and see if she likes it. The edition I'm linking to below is the 4th book in the series which covers the time period around the end of the Revolutionary War and the early formation of the American Government.

Frank you are making progress on your book citations. Make sure to always add the author hyperlink, and when there is no author photo simply insert the link and put (no photo) after the name. Your citations should look like this:
by Desmond Seward (no photo)
by Jonathan Sumption (no photo)

Hi all, I need a good recommendation. I adored McCullough's John Adams. I have read everything by McCullough and wanted to find something more authors/reads like that. What I liked: History told through central person or family, facts/dates that can be verified(appendix) and author’s personality or some wit.

David McCullough
May I suggest books by Doris Kearns Goodwin, H.W. Brands , Hampton Sides or Walter Isaacson? They all tend to write in the same style as McCullough.

Hi All,Hoping this group can help. I'm going to Yosemite next week and would like to read about this history before and while I am there. I'm having a hard tim finding books about Yosemite History. Finding lots of references to guidebooks and
John Muir, but not a lot else. If anyone has read anything on the history of Yosemite and can share a recommendation please reply. I did find this:
by Jen A. Huntley (no photo) which looks very good, but I can't find it in any local bookstores/libraries.While looking for the book I did find this great podcast that interviews authors of new history books. Here is the link to the one on The Making of Yosemite: http://newbooksinhistory.com/2012/04/...

Hi Jason.
Great attempt at citation. If a book has a bookcover, you don't need a book link. The "no photo" uses (), not []

Bryan wrote: "Great attempt at citation. If a book has a bookcover, you don't need a book link. The "no photo" uses (), not []" I changed the [], but I like to keep the whole title, its sometimes hard to see on the book covers.

Great link Bryan! Thanks! Anyone else have something they have read on Yosemite history?
I see your point, Jason, but it is the required way to do citations. If you scroll over the bookcover with your mouse pointer, the title pops up. I think with mobile devices, you would have to click on the cover to get more information.

I am sorry. Did I do something wrong because I do not understand your message. I am pretty new to posting comments so I do not know the correct formatting rules. I usually just post my book reviews.

I picked up the following book while I was in Yosemite a couple of years ago, and found it very interesting. Don't let the title mislead you -- there's a lot of text to go with the wonderful photos.
The Yosemite Grant, 1864-1906, a Pictorial History, by Hank Johnston.
Hope this helps.

Hi M.M., I see you just introduced yourself on our intro thread and our response includes guidelines about our book citation format. We always use the add book/author feature located above the comment box to add the book cover, author photo (when available) and author link. The book you mentioned should look like this:
by Hank Johnston (no photo)In this case there was no author photo so we designate that with the (no photo) next to the hyperlink. It is easy once you get the hang of it, so let any of the moderators know if you need a hand. We are here to help. We use this feature so that folks can quickly look up the book to see reviews, or add it to their TBR list if they choose. It also tracks where the book is mentioned on the GR site which many people find informative.
Thanks for adding this recommendation.
