Life of Charles Henry Davis, rear admiral, 1807-1877 by Charles Henry Davis by Charles Henry Davis

Although this may not give you as much history as you desire, this book traces the importance on the various religions in Japan and their societal effects. It may be of interest to you.....I hope so.

Vince, this is the right place. I am sure that the other Assisting Mods and group members may have some better ideas.

But since Willy was a prolific author; we have to add the author citation. And there was a wonderful photo of him too.

Willy Brandt Willy Brandt

Folks, Vince needs some assistance finding a great biography of Brandt in English. Hope some of you have some good ideas.

Karolyn | 67 comments I'm getting ready for my annual trip to Argentina and Chile. Any recomendations on good books about the history of either country? I go down almost every year, but have not read much about that part of the world.

message 362: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Have you read anything about Eva Peron......it certainly is not a complete history of Argentina but covers one of the most important times in the life of the country.

message 367: by Josh (new)

Josh Liller (joshism) I am looking for books about Spanish Colonial Florida, particularly the 1700s when Spanish Florida was in conflict with the British colonies.

I know Queen Annie's War saw the destruction of the Spanish mission system and a siege of St Augustine in 1702. The War Of Jenkins Ear saw another siege of St Augustine in 1740 by Oglethorpe and a Spanish counteroffensive into Georgia in 1742.

message 368: by Vincent (new)

Vincent (vpbrancato) | 1248 comments Thanks Jill & Bryan for the book suggestions for Willy Brandt - the one is listed only on Amazaon as a $40 paperback and the other as a used 89 cents hardbound.

I will look in the library and see what I can get.

Thanks very much

Krystal (queenravenclaw) Hi I am now in need to read something on Egyptian history my mom keeps saying that Cleopatra never had any kids but the book Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran by Michelle Moran Michelle Moranis saying different. I'm either looking on biography of Cleopatra or an actual book that could give me hints on Egyptian history of rulers.lets say from Nefertiti to a few rulers after Cleoptra's rule. Just on Ancient Egypt not like a whole history. I hope i'm not too confusing.

message 371: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) History of Ancient Egypt by Nicolas Grimal by Nicolas Grimal

This book may be something you want to read as it covers each reign up until the conquest by Alexander the Great. Hope this helps.

message 372: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (queenravenclaw) Cleopatra was after Alexander from the way I'm reading the book mentioned above. So i'm looking up to Cleopatra and one after her reign whoever that was.

message 374: by 'Aussie Rick' (last edited Jan 18, 2012 08:40PM) (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Krystal, Cleopatra certainly did have a child. I have copy of this book at home but have not read it yet but it has received some very good reviews and should offer everything and more that you’re looking for:

The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt by Toby Wilkinson by Toby Wilkinson
description:
This is a story studded with extraordinary achievements and historic moments, from the building of the pyramids and the conquest of Nubia, through Akhenaten's religious revolution, the power and beauty of Nefertiti, the glory of Tutankhamun's burial chamber, and the ruthlessness of Ramesses, to Alexander the Great's invasion, and Cleopatra's fatal entanglement with Rome. As the world's first nation-state, the history of Ancient Egypt is above all the story of the attempt to unite a disparate realm and defend it against hostile forces from within and without. Combining grand narrative sweep with detailed knowledge of hieroglyphs and the iconography of power, Toby Wilkinson reveals Ancient Egypt in all its complexity.

message 381: by Jim (new)

Jim Hello all!

I recently moved to France and I'm searching for two topics - overall French History and overall European history. What I'm after is broad-stroke overviews to help me learn the lay of the land, so to speak. From there, I can drill down on specific interests as they arise.

I realize that both topics are very large, so multi-volume series are okay. Another possibility is general periods of French and/or European history. For example, "pre-revolutionary France", or "Europe during the renaissance", and so on.

I'm at the beginning of a big reading period as I adjust to my new country/continent, so overviews to get me started, then details later.

Thanks!

Jim

message 382: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Jim, with the caveat that I have not read any of the following, they are all on my to-read list and might be ones that you would consider. It is entirely possible that most of them were recommended by other members of this club so am sure people will chime in with other recommendations.
Parisians An Adventure History of Paris by Graham Robb by Graham Robb
Paris The Secret History by Andrew Hussey by Andrew Hussey

these are about more specific events rather than general history but you might find them of interest:

Paris 1919 Six Months That Changed the World by Margaret MacMillan by Margaret MacMillan Eiffel's Tower And the World's Fair Where Buffalo Bill Beguiled Paris, the Artists Quarreled, and Thomas Edison Became a Count by Jill Jonnes Jill Jonnes

These all look pretty good. I'm especially drawn to the Liebling book - as my waistline can attest to... LOL!

message 384: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Jim, some excellent recommendations by Alisa there, you could also consider these titles by a British author who writes very well on French history:

Seven Ages Of Paris by Alistair Horne & Friend or Foe by Alistair Horne by Alistair Horne Alistair Horne

Jim 'Aussie Rick' wrote: "Hi Jim, some excellent recommendations by Alisa there, you could also consider these titles by a British author who writes very well on French history:

Thank you Rick! I'm really curious about the Friend or Foe title. Very near me are two castles on the Dordogne river - Beynac and Castelnaud. During the Hundred Years war, the French occupied Beynac and the British Castelnaud, essentially making the Dordogne the border between France and England. Or so the guides explained to me...

As I'm typing this, I realize maybe my first 'detailed' history book should be about the Hundred Years war.

message 386: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Oh and you might actually find a French version of this book somewhere. The translated/English version was excellent and I learned a bit about France during the WWII occupation through this woman's story. Again, specific content rather than general history, but I found it very compelling.
Resistance A Frenchwoman's Journal of the War by Agnes Humbert Agnes Humbert

message 387: by Brant (new)

Brant | 5 comments Jim,

Penguin has been releasing books over the last few years, or more, covering relatively broad periods of European history. The series is aptly, if uncreatively, titled Penguin History of Europe. Most have gotten rather good reviews. I believe there are gaps in time, but depending upon how far back you want to go, one of the more recent ones was on the classical period:

The Birth of Classical Europe A History from Troy to Augustine by Simon Price by Simon Price

Others in the series are:

The Inheritance of Rome Illuminating the Dark Ages 400-1000 by Chris Wickham by Chris Wickham

Europe in the High Middle Ages (Penguin History of Europe) by William Chester Jordan by William Chester Jordan

The Pursuit of Glory Europe 1648-1815 (Penguin History of Europe) by Tim Blanning by Tim Blanning (This one was particularly well-received.)

On the post-1945 period (published by Penguin, but I'm not sure if it's technically part of the series):

Postwar A History of Europe Since 1945 by Tony Judt by Tony Judt Tony Judt

message 388: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Jim, aaah, the Hundred Years War, a good subject. This book offers a nice concise history in one book:

A Brief History Of The Hundred Years War by Desmond Seward by Desmond Seward

But for an excellent and very detailed history of this period could I suggest the following three books by Jonathan Sumption.

Trial by Battle (The Hundred Years War Vol. 1) by Jonathan Sumption & Trial by Fire (The Hundred Years War Vol. 2) by Jonathan Sumption & Hundred Years War v. 3 (Hundred Years War Vol 3) by Jonathan Sumption by Jonathan Sumption

message 389: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Jim....you gave us a broad subject......but for the ultimate book for the period of the rise of Nazi Germany and how it affected Europe, I must recommend:

Thank you Alisa, Brant, Rick and Jill! These should definitely give me a good foundation for my reading.

Ebb (ebbsbooks) Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find some books about British history (maybe even some about Wales, Ireland and Scotland also). Any book on any country or period would be helpful, I just want to be get a little familiar with UK history since I'll be studying abroad in London this Fall.

I've already started a bit into "The Story of Britain" by Rebecca Fraser and I've already read "Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey, which I really enjoyed. Does anyone have any suggestions for books I can read to familiarize myself with British history or what events in British history you find especially intriguing to read about?

Oh my gosh. Any book about English History? Theres so much! Try ANYTHING from Alison Weir or Antonia Fraser. There's a book by Robert Lacey called "Great Tales from English History: true stories about the extraordinary people who made Britain great" its about $12 on amazon. That way you will know about those countries greatest heroes.

Now I've started I can't stop! lol. Liza Picard's "Victorian London" & "Elizabeth's London" should give you a nice background of how the city was & came to be. Also Edward Rutherford has a huge book simply titled "London" that, while its fiction, takes place from the beginning of its creation all the way into modern London w/ all the important events going on in the background. Daniel pool has a book titled "what Jane Austen ate & Charles Dickens knew" daily facts about life in the 19th century. That should get you started! Good luck....Im jealous.

To go with the fabulous historical fiction (mystery) The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, you might want to try somethin more recent about Richard III, like Richard III: The Maligned King by Annette Carson.
