Mikey B. Thanks for the quick answers!!

What I am looking for is a general overview - not something specific on one country. Actuality what I would to see is an comparison of women's rights in European countries versus those of North America or Asia.

I will take a look at the one of Patizia Albanese

Alisa (mstaz) Judy, terrific suggestion. This is an outstanding book and very informative. I heard Sheryl WuDunn speak and she was amazing.

Bryan Craig Mikey, if this is the case, you might be better served by reference books to start you out. They should have a bibliography. Large public libraries and university libraries should carry:

One more and I'll leave you alone. :-)
From the podcast I listen to regularly (New Books in History):

Women's Human Rights Seeking Gender Justice in a Globalizing Age by Niamh Reilly by Niamh Reilly(no photo)

"It’s a great introduction to the subject, and it’s full of smart analysis for people who are already familiar with the movement. If you want a guide through the alphabet soup of UN treaties, international conferences, and NGOs relating to women, this is a good place to look. But more importantly, it’s also a succinct overview of the big issues: violence against women, reproductive health, armed conflict, development, and the impact of religious fundamentalisms."

Chrissie Witch-Hunt: Mysteries of the Salem Witch Trials

I highly recommend this book if you are curious about the known facts of the Salem Witch Trials between February 1692 and May 1693 in colonial Massachusetts. Nineteen were hung, one was pressed to death and another fifty confessed to being witches and so were not executed. It is a YA book, but it is clear, informative and not childish.

Hugues (lhug) Hello

I'm looking for books about Hundred Years War, but, as I'm french, I would like to read books dealing with the english side in this war. Does somebody have any ideas ?

message 570: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Hugues,

There is a great three volume history on the Hundred Years War that may interest you:

Trial by Battle (The Hundred Years War Vol. 1) by Jonathan Sumption and The Hundred Years War Trial By Fire (The Middle Ages Series) by Jonathan Sumption and Divided Houses (The Hundred Years War Vol. 3) by Jonathan Sumption by Jonathan Sumption

Otherwise I recently finished reading the two books by Juliet Barker that you should enjoy:

Hi,
I'm actually looking for a book for my mother. What I need is a comprehensive, but easily readable book on the history of United States. My mother has lived here in the US for more than 30 years now, but she was born in Chile, and as such never had the opportunity to actually study and appreciate US history in school. She wants to fill in her knowledge gap and I'd love to buy her something that will remedy the situation.

message 574: by Craig (new)

Craig (twinstuff) Joy Hakim's A History of Us series is a very reader-friendly guide to American history although it's not a one-volume book - there are actually ten books in the series. But you could try one in the series and see if she likes it. The edition I'm linking to below is the 4th book in the series which covers the time period around the end of the Revolutionary War and the early formation of the American Government.

Frank (fmorrison42) | 12 comments Greetings,

I'm working on a paper about the diplomacy in the beginning of the Hundred Years War. I currently have in my reference library:

The Hundred Years War The English in France 1337-1453 by Desmond Seward by Desmond Seward

and

Divided Houses (The Hundred Years War Vol. 3) by Jonathan Sumption by Jonathan Sumption

and finally

The Hundred Years War Revised Edition by Robin Neillands by Robin Neillands

I'm trying to find a few more books that discuss the strain between Edward III and Philippe VI. Thanks!!

message 576: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Frank you are making progress on your book citations. Make sure to always add the author hyperlink, and when there is no author photo simply insert the link and put (no photo) after the name. Your citations should look like this:
The Hundred Years War The English in France 1337-1453 by Desmond Seward by Desmond Seward (no photo)
Divided Houses (The Hundred Years War Vol. 3) by Jonathan Sumption by Jonathan Sumption (no photo)
The Hundred Years War Revised Edition by Robin Neillands by Robin Neillands Robin Neillands

If you amend your post I will delete this one. Once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature.

Jason | 104 comments Hi All,

Hoping this group can help. I'm going to Yosemite next week and would like to read about this history before and while I am there. I'm having a hard tim finding books about Yosemite History. Finding lots of references to guidebooks and John Muir John Muir, but not a lot else. If anyone has read anything on the history of Yosemite and can share a recommendation please reply.

I did find this:
The Making of Yosemite James Mason Hutchings and the Origin of America's Most Popular National Park by Jen A. Huntley by Jen A. Huntley (no photo) which looks very good, but I can't find it in any local bookstores/libraries.

While looking for the book I did find this great podcast that interviews authors of new history books. Here is the link to the one on The Making of Yosemite: http://newbooksinhistory.com/2012/04/...

Hi Jason.

Great attempt at citation. If a book has a bookcover, you don't need a book link. The "no photo" uses (), not []

The Making of Yosemite James Mason Hutchings and the Origin of America's Most Popular National Park by Jen A. Huntley by Jen A. Huntley (no photo)

Go ahead and edit your message and I will also see if I can remember any books for you.

Bryan Craig I see your point, Jason, but it is the required way to do citations. If you scroll over the bookcover with your mouse pointer, the title pops up. I think with mobile devices, you would have to click on the cover to get more information.

I picked up the following book while I was in Yosemite a couple of years ago, and found it very interesting. Don't let the title mislead you -- there's a lot of text to go with the wonderful photos.

Hi M.M., I see you just introduced yourself on our intro thread and our response includes guidelines about our book citation format. We always use the add book/author feature located above the comment box to add the book cover, author photo (when available) and author link. The book you mentioned should look like this:

The Yosemite Grant 1864-1906 A Pictorial History by Hank Johnston by Hank Johnston (no photo)

In this case there was no author photo so we designate that with the (no photo) next to the hyperlink. It is easy once you get the hang of it, so let any of the moderators know if you need a hand. We are here to help. We use this feature so that folks can quickly look up the book to see reviews, or add it to their TBR list if they choose. It also tracks where the book is mentioned on the GR site which many people find informative.

Thanks for adding this recommendation.

Hi Karen! ~ Since you are new to the group you should pop over to the intro thread and tell us a little about your interest in history. Here is the thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

We do have club guidelines including using the add book/author feature for posting books so people can see what you are referring to. It is easy once you get the hang of it. Instructions and our guidleines can be found in these links:

More information:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Take a moment to read our guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

and the orientation to get you started:

We find these guidelines and the book citation format keeps this huge club well organized and easy to navigate for everyone. If you need any help please don't hesitate to ask any of the moderators. We are here to help and want everyone to have a great experience.

You're welcome. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I have a thing for the histories of the various national parks. If you want an excellent read about Yellowstone, you want The Yellowstone Story, Revised Edition, Volume I A History of Our First National Park by Aubrey L. Haines by Aubrey L.
