James Snodgrass | 3 comments So I finished the 1st 4 of the series, and I have enjoyed most of the reading time, but alot of the complaints I read about this series I agree with. The main complaint is the pacing and or recapping. It feels alot like all the books could have been a 3rd shorter or condensed. So while I've generally enjoyed the universe and characters Kevin Anderson has created here, I've since left the series, finished The Expanse series, started the Hyperion series (just finished book #1), and am considering starting The old mans war, Man Kzin wars or The Dark Tower very soon. Should I go ahead and give my time back to the Saga 7 suns series or should I trust my gut?

Ash I always find if I go against my gut, all I can think about is that my gut tells me to stop reading for the rest of the book.

I haven't read what you are reading myself. But I'd definitely recommend old man's war, I only really have ebooks. I get hardbacks of a small selection of books that I enjoy. Old man's war is one of them.

Ally | 99 comments Congratulations ! I couldn't finish the 1st book. I found it boring.
The old man's war was great, I read the next 2 but quit there. You must be able to quit a series when you feel like one more is too much; when the subjectif that interested you in the first place has been used enough.

Brandon Harbeke | 131 comments Since there is so much recapping, maybe it would be best to wait until you have a strong desire to return to the saga before trying book 5. There is no great change in writing style, quality, or any other indicator between the two halves of the series. There's probably a little more widespread destruction and chaos in the later books.

One technique you can use is to read or skim the excerpt provided by Amazon or the publisher's website. Does it excite you and make you want to read more? If so, then it may be worth your time.

Conal (conalo) | 143 comments You will need to decide if reading further in the series works for you. I can say that book 5 & 6 are more of the same and and don't really contribute all that much to the series. He does wrap things up very nicely in book 7 so you do have that to look forward to if you continue. I really think KJA should have consolidated this story to a trilogy which I believe many would have enjoyed more. He seems to have learned some from this and is only writing a trilogy for his follow up series to the Saga.

Old Man's War series was great... Man-Kzin was hit and miss and I only read the first couple of them. Dark Tower is really a different genre but was also good.

The 1st was alil boring no doubt. I mainly finished it because I'd read it was loooong in the Universe setup, but was needed because of the length of the whole series. But in reality I think the whole series should been condensed.

Nice to know he does wrap things up well by the end. I think I'll return to this series once I've hit a lul in my other need to read books I've been accumulating. Maybe Gunslinger now since it is alil different genre. Thanx for comment

Trike | 779 comments If you don't like it, stop. Read the 2- and 3-star reviews of the next ones from people whose opinions match yours on other books.

As for me, I really liked the first few Man-Kzin Wars books. (I've read all but one so far.) Some are really great, but they eventually go seriously off the rails in the later books when Niven & Co.'s extreme conservative agenda start screwing with the universe. The rabidly anti-science stuff is beyond defense in the later books. Avoid anything with the names Hal Colebatch or Jessica Q. Fox on it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Old Man's War novels. Some are better than others, but overall I would recommend them.

I would also recommend the Sten series by Allan Cole and Chris Bunch. They are immensely entertaining, fast reads. The first one is Sten. I think there might be omnibus editions out there.

Also highly recommended is Jack L. Chalker's original Saga of the Well World. (There was a lesser sequel series.) The first one is Midnight at the Well of Souls.
