Rebecca WHY DID TRIS HAVE TO DIE???

Owaiz Roth explains why, here: http://veronicarothbooks.blogspot.com...

Rebecca Thanks

True

Emma Bond IF you think about it... Tris has been through so much over the three books. Although this is a non-fiction book, it would be completely unrealistic if she had survived Jeanine and everything else that she went through :)

But I do of course agree that it was devastating

Meena Yeah, I know. Although it frustrates me that she made it through the death serum, and she definitely deserved to live after that. But she died just because people shot her, which seems so ordinary compared to a serum meant to kill you. I don't know. Probably there was a reason Veronica Roth did that; in fact, I could think of some right now. But still, that bothers me.

Rebecca Good point

Thanks for that! It really explained everything for me!

Anna I was so mad for making Tris survive everything so brave and then let her die for something that lame. I do realise she would never be entirely happy but it's cruel, poor Tobias and Caleb and all the other living on without her and filled with guilt

It is nice that Roth's agents made her do damage control, er, I mean, that she took the time to explain why she ended the story the way she did, but here's the thing... You know how they say, if you have to explain why your joke was funny, your joke probably wasn't funny? Same principle. An author should never have to explain what the point of their story is. If a story was well-written and concise it would have spoken for itself. The fact that she had to write an essay explaining what the whole point of her story was - because really, I have not found one single person who says they understood this point before she came out and explained it - then she did not write a good story.

And the annoying part, to me, is that her explanation is still nonsensical. I don't care that Tris died at all, but if what Roth says was the specific point behind her story, understanding what selflessness meant and honoring her parents (Roth clearly knows nothing about parent-child relationships), then I will counter that death is not actually necessary to make either of those points. Technically, the point was satisfied in the moment of Tris's decision to take Caleb's place. If Roth wanted to write Tris's selfless, sacrificial death, she needed to write the story around a point for which death was actually necessary. You can't tackle something like this (killing off the main character, the narrator) unless you can execute a tight story that satisfies the unavoidable need for this plot twist in a clear way. It's not easy even for seasoned writers, so I don't know what made Roth think she could do it - it missed the mark spectacularly.

I agree with you, I don't really mind that she dies, well I do but it makes the story better, but it bothers me that she dies because she gets shot, she has done so many thing, surviving the death serum, and Jeanine and many more and then she gets shot... I mean come on!

Lauren Believe it or not, I thought the fact that Tris dies from boring old bullets was the only clever part of this situation.

Maybe it is. I realise she could never have a normal life after what happened but for this heroic character I kind of hoped for a better end

That's what makes it such a good story, I can't let it go. The best stories are those that can't just be forgotten. But that's exactly what I mean, describing how he lives on but doesn't really move on I mean seriously, she didn't have to do that
