need a recommendation based on Raistlin

hey everyone. many years back I read the dragonlance books and was introduced to Raistlin Majere . I really enjoyed this character. then I read the dragonlance books based on him and his brother . man this guy was awesome. ever since I have always kind of been looking for this chaotic neutral type of character again .someone whom on the surface is bad, evil and disliked but ultimately you learn he has a heart in there and the darkness everyone sees only masks the good decisions he did for friends or loved ones that sent him down that path. sure if he would have made another decision he might be a "good guy" but then someone important to him would be dead or worst...evil...

anyhow any suggestions with stories with a dark hero like this?

Pretty much everything by Roger Zelazny or Jack Vance plus the Lankhmar series by Fritz Leiber.

Are you trying to stick to the fantasy genre? The Man Who Used the Universe by Alan Dean Foster is SF, but what you're looking for.

I agree with Phil on Zelazny, although most of his main characters are likable, if not paragons of morality. IIRC, Raistlan wasn't likable at all. It's been a long time since I read any of those books, though.

Perhaps some Joe Abercrombie? The first character that springs to mind for me is Glokta from his First Law trilogy. Book 1 The Blade Itself, but pretty much all of his characters seem to have that moral ambiguity going on.
