This is a confusing thread. I'm not sure if the original posting got deleted. Our custom is to leave the original post as is, and to add any additional information or a solved announcement in a new comment. It keeps things linear.
No harsh words, just a reminder to all of us who use this group!

I think Mar left her original post as is (dated May 14) except adding that first line that informs us it's solved.
Possibly YA book, coming-of-age, published before 1975. I read it as a Reader's Digest Condensed.
Protagonist is 12-(or so) yr-old boy. His father thinks boys should choose their own names. He calls his eldest son "Son" and when the boy comes of age, the boy chooses a name for himself. The second son is stubborn and wants his father to name him. His father refuses so the boy is called "Boy." He develops a problem with his legs/knees and he spends most of the summer sitting on the porch. I remember one scene where another boy is making fun of him, walking back and forth on the street, saying, "Boy oh boy."
The setting might be the south, perhaps the 20s or 30s, rural to semi-rural.
In the end, the boy chooses a name, but the author does not tell us what he chooses. In the author's note at the end, he said he hopes the reader has decided on a name.
