message 1: by Winter, Group Reads (last edited Sep 01, 2016 12:24PM) (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Hi Everyone!

Fall is upon us and it is time to nominate for November! The theme of the month is Family!

Please remember to state a connection to the theme when you nominate. Thank you :)

Here are some short rules for nominating books:

~ Each person can nominate 1 book.

~ Book must be available both as a physical copy and as an ebook.

~ Authors: Please do not nominate your own book.

~ Please include the name of the book and the author or link to the book.

~ Please do not nominate books that are part of a series, unless it is the first book.

~ You can second someone else's nomination, but that will count as your nomination.

~ When nominating, please state a connection to the theme.

~ You cannot nominate a book which has previously been a group read. Past buddy reads are fine. (See Group Reads in the bookshelf)

This thread will be closed by September 25th, and we will choose ten books for the poll. If there are more than ten books nominated, we will choose the ten most nominated. If there is still a tie to get into the top ten, we'll go back to the Goodreads average rating to see which is highest.

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Please read through the rules before nominating and remember to give a reason why you think the book fits the theme :)

message 3: by J (new)

J | 20 comments I nominate The Fire Sermon

It relates directly to the theme of 'Family' as it is about the relationship between two twins in a fierce setting.

message 4: by Jo (new)

Jo March It's my favorite book, and my username obviously comes from it, so I'll nominate

Little Women (Little Women, #1) by Louisa May Alcott

message 5: by Simon (new)

Simon (simontaneously) | 173 comments I would like to nominate Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes).

I have not read it yet and I believe it connects to the theme of family since it is a memoir of childhood and seems to have a focus on an Irish Catholic family's struggles.

message 6: by Alana (new)

Alana | 1 comments I would like to nominate An Untamed Land by: Lauraine Snelling. It connects to the theme of family because it is about two young couples who leave their families behind to imigrate to America and start their own families.

message 7: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments I nominate Happy Family by Tracy Barone. Not only does the title meet the theme, the book discusses a woman's efforts to find out about her biological family and reconcile it with her adopted family. This book was published this year, so it qualifies for the Goodreads Choice challenge too!

message 8: by Rachael (new)

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4767 comments I nominate The Bonesetter's Daughter as it is the story of a mother-daughter relationship and how it changes when things from the past are revealed.

message 9: by Lora (new)

Lora (airotia) I'd like to nominate Shelter by Jung Yun. I think it strongly connects to the idea of family because a man suddenly has to take in his parents, and the novel revolves around the family having to work through some serious emotional issues with each other once they find themselves suddenly all living in the same house.

message 10: by Joe (new)

Joe | 110 comments I'll second Angela's Ashes

message 11: by Ann (new)

Ann (hammiam) | 222 comments I'd like to nominate "Any Known Blood" by Lawrence Hill.

Blurb from Amazon.

Any Known Blood follows five generations of an African-Canadian-American family in a compelling story that slips effortlessly from the slave trade of 19th-century Virginia to the modern, predominantly white suburbs of Oakville, Ontario -- once a final stop on the Underground Railroad. Elegant and sensuous, wry and witty, it is an engrossing tale about one man’s attempt to find himself through unearthing and giving voice to those who came before him.

message 12: by Kadijah Michelle (last edited Sep 03, 2016 05:10AM) (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I will second The Bonesetter's Daughter. Amy Tan is a great author.

message 13: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Thank you for the great nominations everyone!

message 14: by Janine (new)

Janine | 1553 comments There have been a lot of good nominations already, but I'm going to add another one to the pile.

I'd like to nominate A Man Called Ove. Ove is a cranky old man who likes to keep himself to himself, but his world is turned upside down by a particular family moving next door to him.

message 15: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments I nominate Homegoing. Is a book that narrates the story of a family through 3 generations and start with two sisters separated and one sell as a slave, the story is narrated also from different perspectives from her descendants. It has great reviews and I think will be perfect for it.

message 16: by Heather (new)

Heather Sullivan | 4 comments I think Angela's Ashes would be a wonderful book for November.

message 17: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (dangerprowse) I would like to nominate My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. It tells of the part of his childhood he spent on the Greek island of Corfu between 1935 and 1939. It describes the life of the Durrell family on the island in a humorous

message 18: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (dangerprowse) Sorry... Pressed post & can't seem to edit... Should have ended sentence with 'humorous way'!

One of the best books I have read this year, I think it's an awesome nomination :)

message 20: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Looks interesting both of them, thank you :)

message 21: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamieu) I nominate One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus. It's about a group of white women that traveled to the West to intermarry and start families with Native Americans. A very controversial program under the Grant Administration.

message 22: by Taylor C (new)

Taylor C | 454 comments Janine wrote: "There have been a lot of good nominations already, but I'm going to add another one to the pile.

A Man Called Ove sounds truly lovely! I second this nomination. November setting, cats, and potentially a happy ending.. you can't go wrong. It just sounds so warm and a type of book and I can curl up to!

message 23: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Thanks both :)

It is definitely Taylor!

message 24: by Petra (new)

Petra | 4 comments A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler
A book about four generations of one family that was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

message 25: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (crescentgaia) I'm nominating This is Where I Leave You. It is funny and about family that comes together to sit for shiva (doubles for the sacred family event that comes in November too!). The movie is great, so we can also talk about book vs movie if the group wants to.

message 26: by KellI (new)

KellI Preston | 156 comments I would like to nominate My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me: A Black Woman Discovers Her Family's Nazi Past.

One woman's discovery of where she came from.

message 27: by Paul Emily (last edited Sep 10, 2016 03:35PM) (new)

Paul Emily Ryan (kickbackyak) There's a lot of books I could put for this. Like, I could try for The God of Small Things again, and I wouldn't mind revisiting The Bonesetter's Daughter if I actually had it. I have A Man Called Ove and it'd be great to finally read it. I'm in the middle (heh) of Middlesex now, it's all about family, and it's one of the best books I've read all year.

Saying that though, for the year that's in it and the person I am, I'm going to go ahead and nth Angela's Ashes. I even reread it a few months ago and all! So it's sorta in my mind. ^^

message 28: by katie (new)

katie | 160 comments I nominate The Tragedy of Arthur by Arthur Phillips.

The main character and his sister discover that their family inheritance is a previously unknown play by Shakespeare that their father kept secret.

Thanks all!

message 29: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 581 comments Petra wrote: "A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler

I'll second A Spool of Blue Thread - it seems to have been popular with a few of my friends...

message 30: by Yaara (new)

Yaara Jo wrote: "It's my favorite book, and my username obviously comes from it, so I'll nominate

I'll second that. Its been ages since I read it.

message 31: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 190 comments I nominate Thanksgiving . The book is about the Thanksgiving dinner in a family during 350 years and amongst many generations :)

message 32: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Eileen wrote: "I nominate Thanksgiving . The book is about the Thanksgiving dinner in a family during 350 years and amongst many generations :)"

It looks like this book is only available digitally Eileen. We want everyone to be able to read the group book so it needs to be available both digitally and as a psysical copy.

message 33: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Thanks everyone! Some great suggestions here!

message 34: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoneke) | 7 comments The colour of Tea! The story of a woman struggling with infertility and finding a new meaning to 'family'.

message 35: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Thank you :)

message 36: by Libby (last edited Sep 16, 2016 05:29PM) (new)

Libby | 24 comments America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray I would like to nominate America's First Daughter: A Novel ( March 1, 2016)
by Stephanie Dray (Author), Laura Kamoie (Author)
I really liked this fictional yet well researched Novel about Thomas Jefferson and his family and especially his relationship with his daughter after his wife died. Excellent
America's First Daughter

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) I second the nomination for Homegoing.
