SOLVED. MG-YA about a Girl and her Village(?) who can shapeshift into Animals. [s]

•Young/Teen Girl (who can shapeshift into animals, as well as her village/people(?)) who pairs up with a normal Teen Boy (met by a wagon perhaps?) to travel to the kingdom(?) to free/help her parents(?).
•Details I remember is that they live off in the forests/mountains and I believe if they leave that area it hurts the shifters(?)
The shifters are recognizable by braids and multi-colored hair.
•The Girl had to dye her hair one color and let it down as to 'blend-in'.
•I remember one particular part where the King(?) forced her parents to shift into animals over and over, giving them no break, leaving them exhausted/weak/near death.
•Read this before/by 2010.

Is it maybe The Princess and the Snowbird by Mette Ivie Harrison? It's the third book in The Hound Saga series, which starts with The Princess and the Hound.

Oh wow, sounds pretty close, but no, not the story I had read so long ago.

Ooh, what about Shapeshifter's Quest by Dena Landon? This one definitely mentions an evil king and a male character who arrives with a traveling caravan. And the reviewers mention that the shapeshifters have a poisonous tattoo that prevents them from leaving the forest where they live.
