The Walking Drum
question
Looking for an adventure book

Something like the Walking Drum. An epic journey/quest with close calls, clever escapes, an old fashioned yarn with a great story that hooks you from the start. Count of Monte Cristo would be another similar title. BUT! Ideally it would be a western or pioneer tale, but I'm not even sure that exists so I'll take anything (except for sci-fi/space).
I've already read RL Stevenson, Dumas, most of the classics, etc. As well as William Dietrich's Ethan Gage adventures.
Really appreciate it.

You might try the Lonesome Dove series by McMurtry. I love the Walking Drum as well, one of Louis' best. The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child might suit you.
You may like the C.S. Forester Books Horatio Hornblower. I also am a huge fan of the Walking Drum and other Historical Fiction books where the authors do the research and bring history alive. I would also recommend the entire series of the Kent Family Chronicles, By John Jakes, That follows on family from France to America, through the revolution, through almost all historical events Up to the start of Hollywood. generations at a time in I believe a 7 volume set that leaves you wanting more.
I know this is an old discussion, but I love "The Walking Drum" and can't resist popping in. There's another L'Amour that has that kind of feel a bit "The Lonesome Gods." But as far as other authors, have you tried H. Ryder Haggard? He's most famous for "King Solomon's Mines", but I haven't read that one. I really like "Queen Sheba's Ring." Here's a summary of it I did for another project.
A famed archeologist, an aging doctor, and a young army engineer set out across the African desert on a great adventure. Professor Higgs is in search of new archeological discoveries. Dr. Adams seeks to rescue his kidnapped son and Captain Orme to forget an unhappy love affair. Maqueda, Daughter of Kings, ruler of the Abati, enlists their aid to destroy the sacred idol of a neighboring tribe with promises to help the doctor rescue his son. However, the idol is a second great sphinx, carved out of a mountain. In their quest they can expect little help from the weak and cowardly Abati. The road is fraught with danger, wild beasts, valiant enemies, and traitorous allies; but their greatest danger is a beautiful woman whom it is death to love.
Also, have you read anything by Antony Hope? "Prisoner of Zenda" is a fabulous story complete with sword fights etc.
Also, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Orczy is a great tale. It's not a long epic like "The Walking Drum" but it has possibly the most fabulous hero ever and is just a good story (with sequels).
