The hook is intriguing, but for me, this book was just "good," not great. Owen Mullen's In Harm's Way

The Ones You Trust by Caroline Overington was also a very good but not exceptional read.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Craftsman
Really enjoyed this twisty procedural that combines a cold case with one in the present. Lots of suspense & great characters. It's still up on NG so go go go!

My review of
The Birthday, first in a new series by Carol Wyer. It was a well paced thriller with a hard to crack case involving the deaths of little girls who attended a birthday party. Not sure I was totally convinced by the motive of the killer.review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Also my review for
Lies by T.M. Logan, a fast paced thriller where social media is used to set up lies to frame an innocent man.review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The fifth installment in the Detective Lottie Parker series by Patricia Gibney was a past paced read. Lottie's personal life is still out of control and she has the disturbing murders of a baby and two young boys to solve.

Thank You, Net Galley, Angela Marsons and of course Bookouture, who kindly approve all my requests.
Here with have book nine in the series with the great character Kim Stone, and her loyal sidekick Bryant.
When the body of a doctor is discovered brutally murdered in local woodland, Detective Kim Stone is shocked to discover the victim is Gordon Cordell – a man linked to a previous case she worked on involving the death of a young school girl. Gordon has a chequered past, but who would want him dead?
As the investigation gets underway, Gordon’s son is involved in a horrific car crash which leaves him fighting for his life. Kim's sure this was no accident.
Then the body of a woman is found dead in suspicious circumstances and Kim makes a disturbing link between the victims and Russells Hall Hospital. The same hospital where Gordon worked.
With Kim and her team still grieving the loss of one of their own, they’re at their weakest and facing one of the most dangerous serial killers they’ve ever encountered. Everything is on the line. Can Kim keep her squad together and find the killer before he claims his next victim?
The killer is picking off his victims at a terrifying pace, and he’s not finished yet !
After the great and shocking ending in number eight, so good to be able to read this so quickly, which takes place only weeks later.
I have never yet given a Angela Marsons book less than a four star, and mostly five stars, so why a four star. In all honestly I was frustrated as the team were, with the case not moving enough, which caused the story just to be a little slower than usual., that's all !
Do I love the characters, oh yes, and Bryant has a stronger role in this and as ever we learn about the personality behind DI Kim Stone.
I just admire an author then can give you such "real" characters than you really feel you know.
Learning more about each character with every book.
Yes finishing strong as usual, with lots of shocks, twists, just a little heavy in the middle, otherwise great.
Four stars from me.
I enjoyed
The Wife's Secret by Kerry Wilkinson, a mystery where a bride goes missing at her wedding reception. Well written and kept me guessing.review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Firstly, thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and my friend Mel Sherratt, who has been a loyal member of my group for years.
A gripping new series from million-copy bestseller Mel Sherratt
An absolute masterpiece. Twisty, turny and full of surprises!’ ANGELA MARSONS, with Angela Marsons being a favourite author of mine as well, and I agree with heron this book !
A killer is on the loose, attacking people in places they feel most safe: their workplaces, their homes. It’s up to DS Grace Allendale to stop the murders, and prove herself to her new team.
All clues lead to local crime family the Steeles, but that’s where things get complicated. Because the Steeles aren’t just any family, they’re Grace’s family. Two brothers and two sisters, connected by the violent father only Grace and her mother escaped.
To catch the killer, Grace will have to choose between her team and her blood. But who do you trust, when both sides are out to get you?
A very clever, gripping, tense thriller, with a story that keeps you guessing all the way.
Will Grace fit in with her new team, the team that had worked with Allie Shenton, will the new team trust their new boss, is Grace's family involved, with nasty past memories in her head can she discover who is the killer.
I had no idea, and still guessing to very near the end, and still not know what was happening.
A great new series from Mel Sherratt. A five star book.
Good to start a new series and character so strongly, and Mel Sherratt is one of the great British authors at the moment alongside, Angela Marsons, Robert Bryndza, Carol Wyer.
One hot summer’s afternoon, five-year-old Ava Sawyer went to a party. She never came home…
Two years later, Ava’s body is found and another little girl, Audrey Briggs, goes missing. Audrey also attended that party …
Leading the investigation is Detective Natalie Ward. A mother of two teenagers, this case chills her to the bone, and is a disturbing reminder of the last job she worked on. One that still keeps her awake at night… Natalie is also suffering from nightmares and struggling with a tough marriage with David her husband who lost his job because of gambling problems, the long hours and her dedication to the job causes the marriage even more problems.
Natalie soon discovers that Ava’s mother has some worrying gaps in her alibi and as she digs deeper, she’s sure Ava’s father is not telling the full story. And what did the owner of the garden centre Elsa see that day? Something that she’s not telling Natalie …
Just as Natalie is facing up to the grim possibility that Ava and Audrey were killed by someone close to home, another little girl from the party doesn’t come home from her ballet lesson. Can Natalie find a way to stop this killer before more innocent lives are taken?
A new series from Carol Wyer, read some of her DI Robyn Carter books that are great, a new character and just a fraction behind the DI Robyn Carter books, but I am sure will get better as the character grows in the series.
A four star book to me, great story, builds to a fast pace in the last third of the book, but found it just a little slow through the middle, and just so many red herring characters to get your head around, but just loved the last chapter, this gave the book the clear four stars.
Gripping, fast-paced and nail-bitingly tense, this book will keep you flying through the pages long into the night, especially the last few chapters, perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Patricia Gibney, and Karin Slaughter.
Ah, another good Aussie debut! Love seeing such good new talent. In The Nowhere Child by Christian White, Aussie Kim is told - surprise! - you're actually American Sandy!
