Possibly Fia and the Imp by Lauren A. Mills? It's not nearly as old as the 50s or 60s, but it looks like the illustrations are done in a very classical style. So maybe that gave the illusion it's older than it actual is? The imp's name is Boggle.

Eliza, thanks for the spoiler warning.
Is he definitely called an "imp" - or possibly something else like a goblin, gremlin, elf, sprite, leprechaun, etc.?
Can you tell us more about the fairies - their appearance, type, where they live, etc.? Definitely three fairies?

You're welcome. :) And yes, he is definitely called an imp and there are definitely three fairies, although as to their appearances, etc., my memory fails me. I'm terribly sorry.

Something else I've remembered about the book:The imp/fairy "love story" was more of a subplot to the main story. It wasn't the central point; in fact, the fairies I believe were sidekicks to the main character. Only trouble is I cannot remember the main plot or character. The fairies and imp were the parts that stuck with me.
I hope this will help a little; this has boggled my mind for years.
Has anyone read The World's Worst Fairy Godmother ? After doing some research, it sounds like this might be the one. Is the ending the same as my mystery book?
Has anyone read The World's Worst Fairy Godmother by Bruce Coville? I think this might be the one if the ending is the same as my mystery book.

There are characters named Zozmogog and Zitzel. And, there is an imp in the story (I think he was Zozmogog).
Wonderful news, everyone! It IS The World's Worst Fairy Godmother by Bruce Coville! The book was actually written in 1996; the copy I remembered was just well-loved. An imp falls in love with one of two (not three) fairies (who are actually fairy godmothers!), who later falls for him. The imp's name, Zozmagog, does definitely remind one of the name Beelzebub. It's those z's that do it. Hallelujah! Thank you all for your help! :)

What I can remember about this book is a group of three fairies who are terrorized by an imp throughout the book (I seem to remember his name being something along the lines of Beelzebub). Towards the end of the book, one of the fairies admits she is in love with the imp. The other fairies are appalled because fairies and imps shouldn't fall in love.
I read it probably about ten years ago and it was already old then. I'm guessing it was written in the 1950s or 1960s.
Thanks! :)
