SubGenre of the Month - September: ♥ Alien Romance

Aliens have taken over our SGoM choice! Ack!

For September the RLftCI SubGenre is ♥ Alien Romance, featuring heroes and heroines that are out of this world. For help, check out Best Alien Romance, Mars Needs Women Trope, Alpha Male Alien Meets Human Heroine Romances. Lots of Erotica in this SubGenre, but for those of you that find that too far out of your Comfort Zone, you might find something within SFR/Sci-fi/Futuristic Romances that are NOT Erotica.

Will do!

I was figuring on a Wallflower book for this month, since it was winning in the poll. Had to do a mad scramble when I saw the newsletter this morning!

Yes, Trea. Aliens took over! If they release their hold on us by October, we'll do Septembers winner then.

Cool, I'll keep my planned book handy then!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I think I'm going to go with the short Bridal Jitters (Ghost Hunters, #0.5) by Jayne Castle and see if I want to get into the series. I've read the first couple of pages already and it is holding my interest. If I like it, and I finish it before the end of August, I'll go with the next in the series After Dark (Ghost Hunters, #1) by Jayne Castle for September.

Lara | 2335 comments I have tons to choose from!

LK, Bridal Jitters (Ghost Hunters, #0.5) by Jayne Castle and After Dark (Ghost Hunters, #1) by Jayne Castle just takes place on an alien planet. The people are all human. I love this series and have read them all, some more than once.

I'mgoing to read that one too. I like EL's writing style.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I'm not sure if this fits... but I think it does. Legend Beyond the Stars (The Darkon Warrior Series #1) by S.E. Gilchrist

Lara | 2335 comments Lisa Kay wrote: "I'm not sure if this fits... but I think it does. Legend Beyond the Stars (The Darkon Warrior Series #1) by S.E. Gilchrist"

That one looks interesting. The hero is human, but the summary doesn't clarify if the heroine is too. Sometimes these aren't very clear.

I've started listening to Close Liaisons (The Krinar Chronicles #1) by Anna Zaires , which I've had for a while and is definitely an alien romance. In this one aliens have taken over the earth, but there is no apocalypse, unless you consider everyone becoming green-vegetarian/vegan and environmentally conscious an apocalypse. It also has an interesting alien history on earth and different human origin story.

So far, I'm not very impressed with the story. The hero is condescending, patronizing, manipulative, and intimidating. The heroine is shy and backward and easy to push around. It is also a bit erotic as there is a lot of warm pooling and wetness.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Now that I've stopped laughing (a bit), I pretty sure the heroine is also human in Legend Beyond the Stars. But she keeps referring to him as alien. **shrugs** I think he's human, too. I'm not sure if he was originally from Earth, though. And, if he isn't, but his parents were, does that make him an alien?

You know, I didn't read 50 Shades, but I'm wondering if there isn't a connection with the book. It's got a young and inexperienced woman taken up by a powerful, experienced, and older male who knows what he wants and doesn't give her much opportunity to be herself. She pushes back out of self-defense and there is no equal ground so far. At the same time, the loving descriptions of the vegan meals they eat is a weird juxtaposition. Even mushroom ravioli in cashew cream!

I usually think a human is a human is a human. Sometimes there is interbreeding, which muddies the water. However, there may be something else going on with that book.

message 24: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I make a nice mushroom & leek cashew ravioli cashew cream. Yum. Thinking of it makes me want to make some now.

BTW, I just got back from a trip (10 days to Portland, OR & back) for a week's vegan intensive cooking training. I'm training to demonstrate vegan cooking. Loved it. But as my BFF said one night, in reviewing what she had to do the next day: "Oh. Yeah. I've got to cook my ass off. ... Again!" LOL!

One really nice thing was that there was kitchen help to clean up after us. Wish I had that at home!

Mee | 77 comments I'm in.

read: Berrr's Vow (Zorn Warriors, #4) by Laurann Dohner ~ 9/5
Coto's Captive (Zorn Warriors, #5) by Laurann Dohner ~ 9/8
Claimed (Brides of the Kindred, #1) by Evangeline Anderson ~ 9/6 Hunted (Brides of the Kindred, #2) by Evangeline Anderson ~ 9/7

message 27: by Lara (new)

Lara | 2335 comments I've been planning to read Hunted (Brides of the Kindred, #2) by Evangeline Anderson and own most of the ebooks when I got them on a special deal a while back. I read the first book a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, though the heroine made things harder for herself than necessary.

message 28: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (vickiguardianofthewraiths) I read Marauder Cygnus (Mating Wars #1) by Aya Morningstar and it was hilarious in places and lots of fun sex. Cygnus is a 7' tall purple alien Aura rescues from an escape pod. He has ears on top of his head like a bear. They are chased by space pirates and Cygnus goes all Warrior to protect Aura and kills a bunch of the pirates. It's a fun chase through space and the things that Aura and Cygnus have to adapt to is fun.

Vicki, that sounds like a fun book. I'm going to check it out.

It was and I bought the rest of the series to read and there were a lot of unusual physical traits of Cygnus's I didn't mention you will get a kick out of them

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) I finished Alien General's Bride (Brion Brides, #3) by Vi Voxley . I went back and forth between a 3.5 star and 4 star. I really enjoyed the first 250 pages and they flew by for me. But then I felt like the author tried to "Soften" the hero up a bit too much. He was a fierce warrior and I liked that about him. I could have done without the whole "mate" thing since I get more than enough of that in shifter books and didn't need it in an alien book. Still I liked it enough that I'll read the next one in the series. The aliens in this book look human and that's a tad disappointing - I just added a book to my TBR with blue aliens Ice Planet Barbarians (Ice Planet Barbarians, #1) by Ruby Dixon which I think I will get a kick out of.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I read Accidental Abduction (Alien Abduction, #1) by Eve Langlais , it was fun. I usually like this author's work. They are easy hot reads as this one was. I'll probably read the next one in the series before the end of the month.

Lara | 2335 comments I started Her Alien Savior (Ultimate Passage, #1) by Elle Thorne last night. It's different than I expected and I'm not sure where it's heading. I can guess what will happen eventually with the hero and heroine, but the rest of the plot has me feeling a bit uneasy.

What's the part that's making you feel uneasy?

message 40: by Lara (new)

Lara | 2335 comments ShoSho wrote: "What's the part that's making you feel uneasy?"

(view spoiler) The hero has noticed some things, but is inexperienced at investigation (he's a soldier, not a spy), so is accepting answers rather than checking on them.

message 41: by ShoSho , Moderator (new)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I read 2 more books Intentional Abduction (Alien Abduction, #2) by Eve Langlais which was good and then I read Alpha Trine (The Valespian Pact #1) by Lexi Ander which left me speechless :D

The subject matter was very unexpected and there were some very weird stuff in there but I enjoyed it very much. I'll be reading the next in the series as soon I find time!
