ABANDONED. Girl who met a boy who is dying while she is in the hospital

It is a book published before 2000 I think since I read it about 13 years ago. It should be a young adult book since i read it in my early teens.

It is about a girl who is sick and while she was in hospital, she became friends with a boy who is dying. it was due to the boy influence that she was able to be positive while she was in hospital. I think the boy had leukemia

All I can think of is My Sister's Keeper.
It's a small part if the book, but she does meet a boy with Leukemia, they date and he dies later.
