I did some research on books that discuss masculinity and perceptions of men, and these three all got predominantly good reviews:
King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine
Fire in the Belly: On Being a Man
Manhood in the Making: Cultural Concepts of MasculinityIf group members want to go approach masculinity from a more unconventional angle, we could explore Nietzsche's view of the "superman" (or "ubermensch", as he put it). Considering Nietzsche's reputation (I've never actually read his work so I don't know for certain what his philosophies were), it's very likely none of us would agree with him, but it still might make for an interesting discussion to compare an antiquated notion of what a philosopher once considered to be the "ideal man" as verses how we view the role and traits of men today.
Thus Spoke ZarathustraAnd finally, if group members would prefer looking at fictional stories that feature protagonists who are considered "masculine", here are a couple of suggestions:
The Maltese Falcon
The Spy Who Came In from the ColdHope this helps! :)
