It is not a happy book either which is a real turnoff to some people. It starts with a boy about maybe 8 and just awful things happen to him for most of his life. The thing that I really liked about the book though was the fantastic character study. The author makes the characters come alive. You really start to care about these fictional beings and want to see how they react and grow (or not) with each situation. I particularly liked Boris. I thought it was worth the daunting size of the book, and was kind of sad when it was done.

I pointed out the German publication date because in my mind it would be fine for 2013, that is an original publication date; I would have no problem with you reading it for the tag. As Nicole mentioned we don't have a rule about it so if you want to read it you should. It's a quick read although I thought it was just okay.

I see someone recommended the Signature of all things as 2013. I don't know when it came out, I do know it was in my top four of reads for last year, which included All the Light We Cannot See and the Nightingale. Loved it. It's long, but worth it in my opinion. I say this just having finished a time, and one of less worth.

If you look up The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend, you'll see that in gray there is this notation: (first published September 4, 2013)

Goodreads records the first publication, whether it's e-book, foreign release, self-published, etc.

Many groups on Goodreads rely on that specific date to satisfy specific challenge tasks.

I know that PBT is less strict for the monthly theme, but that may be the source of your confusion.

A couple of my 5 star reads published in 2013 have already been mentioned, but there were two that I gave 5 stars to that I don't think I have seen yet. Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson is a fun young adult fantasy/dystopia about people developing super powers and using them to rule the world. Another one is Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. It is a science fiction novel about an artificial intelligence on a quest for justice that won the Hugo.

Additionally, if you go into My Books and sort by date published, it does so by first publication. The first list that Anita linked in the first post (after the unrealiable link to the 2013 tag/shelf) also gives the first publication date as well.

I finally had a chance to read others' recommendations.

The Rosie Project, Eleanor & Park, and My Story have both been on my TBR, so I might read one of them. And, I do still need to read Scarlet, but I want to reread Cinder first.

I also have These Broken Stars by Amy Kaufman, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, All the Truth that's in Me by Julie Berry, The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, Transparent by Natalie Whipple, Taken by Erin Bowman, Also Known As by Robin Benway, Mind Games by Kiersten White, and The Boleyn King by Laura Andersen on my TBR to choose from.

I bet there's no surprise that most of these titles are YA, lol.

Jenni Definitely read Eleanor & Park. I think it's my favorite Rowell book. I liked Fangirl too.

I'm not very excited by 2013, too general for my taste. I like more specific tags that make me stretch. I agree with a lot of the suggestions made here already especially The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat. For myself I looked up some of the best mysteries of 2013 and I'll likely read The Wrong Girl or Gods and Beasts

When you're checking out publication date on a particular edition it will indicate that edition's publication date and in brackets the original publication date. The latter is the one you see on lists elsewhere. It is the date of the earliest publication from all editions that are bundled together - regardless of language or country. There are of course some editions floating around loosely - these will most likely not have the benefit of original publication date.

I wont fret too much and rely on that information. This is one of the aspects where GRRR has better quality information than Shelfari had...

Well, you're certainly not daunted by tomes! a 600+, 700+ and an 800+ page books for three of them. I actually second your suggestions of The Goldfinch and Night Film and do want to read The Luminaries but not sure if I'm up for 800+ pages at this point in time.

I really liked The Luminaries but it is a book that aside from being long takes a great deal of concentration and perseverance.

What a great opportunity to revisit books a couple years back and comsider what it was that attracted you to certain titles and why you held back. With the delay you can get a real chance to weigh all your GR friends' reviews and make a clear choice once and for all.

My top 3 recommendations from 2013 are books that haven't gotten much mention:
We Need New Names I read this shortly before Americanah and thought it a far better book (both about African immigrant experience.)
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - Quirky
The Shining Girls - time traveling serial killer

I also loved A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and Life After Life

I'm excited to revisit 2013 as I have a list of books that I've never quite gotten to:

My top three to consider are:
The River of No Return - I'm a sucker for time travel
Rivers - a dystopian Daily Deal back in 2013
Ancillary Justice

I might also try Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage but suspect I won't be in the mood for Murakami

Den, if you are on the fence about the Murakami, I invite you to try my 4 star review, for which my pleasure meter put it on the level of Micjell's Black Swan Green. Whatever I am reading I always make room for Murakami refreshment as they come only every few years.

I was looking through my ebooks for a book published in 2013. (I read ebooks at work, & paper books at home.)

I will be reading After The Ending. A childhood friend of mine recommended it awhile ago. I haven't read an apocalypse book in about a year, so I could be due for one.

Ebooks are my preferred format which means unfortunately I keep buying them and not actually reading them . . .it's so nice you are able to read at work!

Seeing as After The Ending did NOT work out for me, a friend suggested Until the End of the World. This was also published in 2013, so it works for this month's theme! Whoo!
