John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1903 comments I just saw "Kubo and the Two Strings" and it was awesome. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4302938/?...

It very much lived up to the promise of the trailer, with out being just about what was in the trailer. It is an all ages adventure that kids and adults will both enjoy and get different things out of. The main story, was about telling stories, and that was a bit meta (but not too much), and very fun. I think a good chunk of the book readers here would enjoy that. It is set in a fantastical feudal Japan, and has tropes from that. The plot does have some zigs and zags, but most are fairly conventional, and that is OK too, since it is told so well. There was one zag that I didn't see coming, and that was just plain good storytelling.

While the animation was absolutely fantastic, I wonder if the extra they spent on it being stop motion vs 3D CG was worth it? There were very few spots that I could tell it was one vs the other. There was a cool behind the scenes thing in the credits about the stop motion in one of the scenes, so if you like that sort of thing stick through those.

As I think back on the movie there is one item that may confuse younger audience members, someone lies very convincingly. There is enough reference to this person not being good, that more mature kids won't have an issue. But I could see younger kids not understanding the why, and getting a bit confused. There is also some death in this movie, and I could see that being hard to deal with for younger kids as well. But if they are mature enough for those couple of things, I think they will love this as much as there parents.

Anyone else see this yet?

Phil | 1452 comments I saw it with my boys (10 and 13) and we all loved it. There's not much to add to what you said except to reinforce how appealing I found Kubo and his story telling to be.

Malaraa | 94 comments Just got back from seeing it, and it was wonderful. Sadly there were only 6-8 other people in there, maybe because we went to the early, 2-d version?
