Shannon Reber | 181 comments So here I am, about to publish another book, but I haven't figured out one little detail. What is the best day to publish? I was told by a friend that major publishers do it on Tuesdays. Not sure if I believe her, or if that even matters. 8-) Is there a good day for it, or is it whenever and market your pants off to get people to see it however possible? I've published a dozen books in the last year and still don't know this. So...what do you think??

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Miss Shannon,
You've published a dozen and you don't know. In that time, I've published one, and I certainly don't know. So in the absolute absence of factual information, I will opine---when you finish it! That's the best time.

L.S. May | 55 comments I had heard the Tuesday thing - but I've also heard that the day/month/season only has a minor effect compared to all other aspects of marketing.

John Hooker | 90 comments If the Internet is the main vehicle for promotion then probably Monday night between 7 and 11 p.m. is when a lot of people are most likely to see an internet ad in the U.S. (which has the world's highest Internet traffic) Of course, you have to allow time for Google to list in their database. That seems to be about three days or so. But if you are sending emails then do it when most people are looking. Avoid summer or any holidays. More people shop for Christmas in November than any other month (but avoid U.S. Thanksgiving week). That's my best guess!

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) I'm going to agree with Charles and say when you're done. The only thing I've tried to do here recently is get my books published around the same time as my other books are coming up for Select reenrollment. This is because it's much easier to plan a promotion if all my 90 day periods are on the same page(pun totally intended).

Marie Silk | 611 comments Good idea on the Select thing, Christina :)

I have also heard that book release days are Tuesday. Something weird thing about when I publish on KDP: they always show the publish date as the day before I click publish. I have no idea why this is.

Suzy Davies | 1 comments This is interesting! What about Children's Books? When is the best day to show a cover reveal, and what time? Are any months better than others? I am about to launch my debut Children's Book in The U.S!

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 560 comments I'm about to publish my third book and the particular day to publish has never occurred to me. The season did. However, I've just picked the date and day as when I'm ready. It happens to be a Tuesday at the end of August holidays. I'll let you know if that's a complete flop!

Great point, Christina! I'm going to keep this in mind, I like keeping things practical.

I've only published one book so far, and it was on a Friday in mid-July. In my opinion it worked out wonderfully, I would do it again. I've heard that summer is not the best season for a book launch, so maybe I'll try to aim at a different season with the next one, just to see if it makes a difference. But I think ultimately the best time to publish is when you're ready, regardless of the time, date or season.

What about on a friday in January? It seems to me that many people will be having gift cards and such to spend.

Once again, Christina, you come up with a kernel of wisdom. I think that's a very good point.

message 12: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 560 comments Alexis, that's a good thought. I did manage to time a KCD for between Christmas and new year, trying to catch the gift cards, and so on and it seemed to be a good time. But I know I'd find it hard to sit on a book ready for publication now.

I wish I could time writing The End for a December!

Thanks. Maybe you could plan a sale/promotion for after NewYears.

message 14: by Tanner (new)

Tanner Walling I've heard a lot that the best time to publish is January because people got Kindles for Christmas and Amazon gift cards/money for books for the Holidays and go out and buy many books to read.

LOL, I have no patience, so without even reading you guys' replies, I published it last night. And Charlie, you're the man. Just because I'm a couch potato who rarely leaves my house, doesn't mean I know anything about writing. I'm just an obsessive, impatient person! 8-)

message 16: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Reber | 181 comments Thank you all! I published it last night, so hopefully it will be ready for an internet scream-fest by tomorrow night. Fingers crossed, anyway. 8-)

message 17: by Marie Silk (new)

Marie Silk | 611 comments Well done, Shannon :) I hope your scream-fest is amazing. I don't even have enough patience for a pre-order. As soon as my book is formatted, the publish button gets clicked.

message 18: by Lyra (new)

Lyra Shanti (lyrashanti) | 126 comments I have no scientific evidence to support this, but I've personally noticed that more people seem to be online on Monday and Friday afternoons. I think they're bored and don't want to do work. lol

Lyra Shanti (lyrashanti) | 126 comments Good luck, Shannon!

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Christina - I like your idea. Why wait? ; )

Lyra - I know of people online everyday to avoid work. : D

Marie - That will be me. Once I upload, tweak, and get the green light, I'm pushing it. : )

Jack O'Donnell | 17 comments I guess it's hard to get noticed any day, but some nights are better than the days and some weeks better than some months - and don't, whatever, you do talk turkey and take Christmas off. I'm guessing. haven't the foggiest. I wonder if there is some algorithm to work it all out.

A Friday in January sounds great! I think I'll aim at something like that.

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments Well done and good luck.
Have you got it on a pre-release? I've found those quite fun, as all your pre-sales count on day 1 of actual release, and you go whizzing up the sales charts (for a day). Weeee!!!

Weirdly, if you believe The Internet...
viewing of the internet/ads actually goes down over a weekend. I find this most odd.
Perhaps we all take advantage of higher speeds at work??? :-/

Now is always a good time imho btw

All the best
xx

Not to mention unobservant managers!

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Shannon - I hope you had a great number of sales yesterday. : )
