What did you think of Charlie and Sam's relationship?

I wanted them to really be together by the end of the book, but I think that is because Im always unrealistically looking for the happy ending love story in anything that I read. It's probably better left the way their relationship is at the end, just basically best friends. He saw her as his ideal though, but just took it to heart that he could never have her.
