Started this today! I'm about 20% and I need to seriously power through because my library loan is up in 3 days lol.
(view spoiler)[So far I am liking it. I was really enjoying it before the end of the last chapter which I think was chapter 5... He just showed up at her door begging for sex and I just thought it was super weird and cringe. Generally I prefer going into books completely blind because I feel like my opinions can be slightly persuaded. I dont know much about this but I do know that people have said this book glorifies (view spoiler)[abuse... (hide spoiler)]which I dont love. I am very interested to find out who that is referring to because I dont know. I am also intrigued to learn that her father was abusing to her mother and that whole thing. (view spoiler)[but I do understand that history can repeat itself in those situations sometimes (hide spoiler)]
With the movie just coming out to Im confused at why Blake Lively is playing a 23 year old???? She is closer to 40 than 30 even, so Im wondering why she was cast... I wonder if they actually changed the story for the casting, but I also just dont see her as playing this character. It just doesnt make sense to me. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I feel sick. Thats so fucked up. I am so afraid that she will stay with him.... ugh I dont know. I am really enjoying this book though. I dont feel at all like the abuse is glorified. I think its raw and realistic. Obviously if there were no happy moments the victims would never stay with their abusers, and the sad reality is that most cases they do. I feel like there really are so many parallels between her relationship and her parents. But you can definitely see that she is making excuses. Even when she is being taken to the hospital she is trying to protect him. But really she loves him and wants to see the good in him, and he does have good qualities, everybody does, even the monsters (hide spoiler)]

Wow. Ok. I did not expect to like this as much as I did. I know CH gets a lot of hate but man does she know how to tell an emotional story. The authors note!!! omg. That really sealed the deal for me. I was definitely nervous going into this with all the controversy and things I had heard about it, but I wanted to make sure that I read it before seeing the movie. (view spoiler)[I had heard that this book glorifies abuse and so I was so nervous that she would stay with Ryle... especially after finding out she was pregnant! I definitely saw that coming. (hide spoiler)] I absolutely love reading through diaries and letters, as well as present/past POVs. I really think it was done well. I absolutely loved reading about Atlas. (view spoiler)[I did know that the abuse was coming with Ryle and I do wish I had gone into this knowing less, I do think it could have changed my reading experience. I did really love the naked truths though, and you can see how easily she fell in love with him. I dont think that the abuse was glorified in anyway, I think it was awful, and powerful, and sickening. But it is messy, and confusing and hard. Lily was so lucky that she was able to see that, and that she had people around her to support her through her decision to leave. Not everyone is so lucky and this story could have been so different if she did not have that. (hide spoiler)] I got chills reading this on more than one occasion, mostly during the emotional scenes (view spoiler)[especially when she asked for a divorce... I was honestly expecting her to decide to stay with him in that moment and I would have been so upset if that were the case! (hide spoiler)] None of these characters are perfect (except maybe Alyssa), they all make mistakes, and its messy... but so is life.

I can’t believe how he used to treat her mom and it’s no wonder why she still hates him. I’d hate him still too. I hate him. Atlas was super sweet though. And I love how much he was so sweet to Lily. I figure he’s going to pop up again at some point. Wonder how that’s going to go. (hide spoiler)]

Having been in an abusive relationship before, I don’t like how she’s not just leaving him right away. Finished (view spoiler)[ I finished this last night and my heart just couldn’t take this one. I’m going with 3 1/2 stars because it was such a rough read for me. I was in an abusive relationship years ago and I remember how it felt and I don’t want anyone to ever feel the same way. So reading this was kind of like reliving it. I went into it blind and i wish I hadn’t. It was just too hard. I’m glad Lily ended up okay, but it was still hard to get through. (hide spoiler)]

Oh, Im so sorry Shannara. I think that is why this books has gotten so much hate, not because of the actual book itself, but the fact that people are taken aback by the topic which is not clearly presented going into the story

I’m not going to say I hate it, but yeah, I feel like it could be advertised differently. But that okay. On to the next read!!!
