Was assigned the book as summer reading in middle school (so 2001 or 2002), though book may be from late 90s as well. In the book, the main female character is selected with a group of other teens/young adults to start human civilization over again/repopulate the planet (not sure if they're repopulating earth or another planet). The main character was chosen specifically because of her knowledge of history, which the other members of the group thought a bit useless. They're dropped off in an uninhabited area and have to learn to fend for themselves.
