Before asking anyone to weigh in on any major issue in self-publishing, you must read this small, honest and pragmatic book written by an experienced hand.

An excellent introduction that succinctly--and evidentially--covers the major points of the self-publishing landscape. Furthermore, its hands-on approach includes self-publishing procedures. It lists a plethora of marketing ideas and contains many references other websites/books as well as Penn's website for more detailed content.

I'd add that this is probably the type of book that must be updated on at least an annual (maybe even biannual) basis given the rapid pace of developments, what works, what doesn't, etc.
