SOLVED. Children's book: Dog attacks a horse (published before 2006). [s]

So, when I was in elementary school my class read a book about a boy and his dog. We read it around 2004-2006 maybe, so it can't possibly be newer than that.

What I mostly remember from the book was that the dog attacked a horse. The horse broke his ankle or something (and I think might have died later? I don't remember). Anyway, everyone in the town was upset and considered the dog unsafe. At the very end the dog was in a cage and the main character, a boy, had to rescue the dog.

I thought the dog's name was Riley which lead me to believe that it was titled "Saving Riley" or "Rescuing Riley", but that's not it.

I know it's not much to go on, but I've been wondering about this book for awhile.
