Richard It's not a "book."

KikiAC I've seen very mixed reviews - someone loved it, someone liked it, someone was okay with it, and someone like me, didn't really like it.
Personally I think the plot is ridiculous, I think it goes against things we've learned in the books, and the characters are acting out of character.

Just read it, but try not to expect too much. Maybe you'll end up loving it, and good for you then :) I wish I would've loved it, but unfortunately I did not.

Rami El I hated it

John It's fine. You just need to take it for what it is (a script) and not expect some epic 500 page book filled with details of the scenery... I found more often than not I was imagining the actors on the stage, but I would not say it was a terrible story. Very much in the spirit of the originals.

John I enjoyed it. My review explains the 4 stars I gave it, but I was probably being kind because I am a fan. My major complaint again was that it's a script and during some scenes I imagined a play taking place. However, when the story picked up I could get out of my head and it felt like I was back there again. If that makes any sense.

well I won't spoil it for you. I hope you won't be as disappointed as I am.

John I'm not excited that it too is being released as a Script. But I will probably still read it.

John It's being released as a script like this book. It's also a movie. I'm not sure which is being released first, but I'll most likely buy/read the book/script and add it to the collection of first editions.

when you finish reading it check my review, I explain in it why it's a terrible book. Now I know that any sequel to the original 7 books has big shoes to fill, but some things in the plot are unforgivable.

John Rowling approved the script, therefore it is Rowling's canon. The other writers are playwrights, and were probably more concerned with how to make a production as such for the stage.

As far as cramming too much in. I found the story to be very short and not very deep at all.

And who can say anything Rowling approves is unforgivable? Rowling herself okayed it. Fans need to lighten the F up.

Hey John, we clearly have different views on the subject. And I understand why you would be defensive. Because I believe that, just like me, you grew up with harry potter. And I truly hope I didn’t offend you by what I said but please let me explain to you why I felt very offended by the play/book/ script.
Harry potter is a completely original series, beautifully crafted with deep meanings. It would be extremely difficult to give it a sequel that lives up to its standards and I am fully aware of that. Aside from the things I mentioned in my review (you can read it in the link in my previous comment if interested), I'd like to point out that the play lacks originality and has the cliché plot of a misunderstood teenager who can't seem to fit in, and goes out of his ways to try to impress his parents. And I personally believe harry potter deserves more than that. Furthermore, so many things contradicted the original 7 books which in my opinion feels disrespectful to the readers, the original characters and the original books.
P.S. I’d like to point out that I was fully aware that this was supposed to be a script/play before I purchased the book (which costs 40USD in my country which is a bit expensive) and I am fully aware of how difficult it is to execute a complex plot in a play, but for the reasons above I felt that this book/script/play was taking advantage of nostalgia to grab lots of money without really considering its predecessors.

John I felt that this book/script/play was taking advantage of nostalgia to grab lots of money without really considering its predecessors.

Blame that on the publishers. I doubt it had much to do with Rowling wanting or needing to make a profit.

And god forbid a book about Harry Potter's son is about a kid who is misunderstood because he's nowhere near as famous a wizard as his father ever was. This was a story about Harry's kid coming into his own and I think it did a wonderful job keeping with the heart of the original series. Was it campy? Yes, it totally fits for a stage production. Would it be different had it been written like a proper book? Almost definitely.

BTW, I'm 40, I was fully grown when I started reading Harry Potter. I just don't expect or believe that an author HAS to write what "I believe" is the right story for a sequel. It's her story, it's her world. No the "book" is not as good as it could be but I liked the direction she took with it. It was different and that's not a bad thing.

I guess we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this.

Clarke Daniels I would definitely read it yourself (or maybe you've already read it by now) but I didn't like it. I went in knowing it was a script and having low expectations, and I still felt disappointed by the end. It just had so many cliches and plot holes, and everyone was way out of character. It's probably better as a play but even the plot was pretty bad. I know a lot of fans have been able to ignore/overlook/blatantly dismiss the plot holes and OoC characters, but unfortunately for me I couldn't stop seeing the problems with it. That being said there are some genuinely brilliant parts to it and it would be a shame if you (or anyone considering reading it) didn't read it just because some people didn't like it. I hope you love it! (I wish I did)
