Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Hey all

When I logged on this morning I was up for a bit of a surprise
the homepage is different.

I had a bit of trouble finding my groups but my friends came up so that was nice. However this made me pause and wonder is goodeads trying to downplay groups and promote friends...what do you think?

message 2: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 87 comments I'm not thrilled. Mine switched over yesterday and it took me until today to figure out how to get to see the group discussions how they used to appear (community > discussions in case that helps). I miss seeing the group discussions :(

message 3: by ladymurmur (new)

ladymurmur | 146 comments I don't mind. It always takes a bit to get used to things after you rearrange the furniture. Nothing I want or need is missing, just in a different place.

message 4: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I don't like it. It seems super busy, with a lot of wasted space. With how groups are hidden it seems like they are downplaying those.

Thanks for the method you used to get here. I went to groups then found this group.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments You can also find the groups by hovering over your avatar, then a drop down will show up. Click on My Discussions and you will find your groups home page.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 127 comments I agree with Darcy, it's super busy. And I hate the three column look. It just seems junky.

message 8: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Its absolutely horrible.

I don't like the left column. I know what I'm currently reading (was 36 now down to 0, as I've changed the shelf name) & I know what I want to read (over 3,000 books there) & I know my shelf names.

So that's a total waste of space & every book cover is HUGE.

Middle section is weird, with friend reviews & huge book blurbs I don't want to see - you used to be able to hover & it would come up for the books you wanted to check out. Now every book is loud & proud, so you have to scroll, and scroll, and scroll, and scroll.

Right side is crap with recommendations you can't get rid of, like you used to be able to do. Ads - currently Oprah & featured groups and then lots & lots of empty space.

There are several add-ons to Chrome & Firefox which can do miracles apparently if you want to change everything to suit yourselves. Adblocker Plus & Elements Finder for Firefox & one of the members of Feedback has posted a Stylish fix https://userstyles.org/styles/131118/...

A couple of discussions I've been following:

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments It is funny to see the hate, some people have such strong feelings and let them know. I'm sure none of the opinions will make any differences to the powers that be. They are going to do what they want, we are stuck with things.

message 10: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Also, is anyone else annoyed with having to see your avatar and a place to comment on every little thing? It just clutters things up. If I want to comment I'll hit the comment button.

message 11: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Yep & yep, just like fb :((((

message 12: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Why oh why does everyone want to be like everyone else??? I would think you'd want to be a little different.

message 13: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments I'd certainly want to be different, but who knows what the Amazon lords think?

message 14: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments You know I hate Facebook.
I have a tough time thinking this is an amazon thing only because IMDB is not like that at all.
I think the idea is you will see a book by a friend and what to check it out. For me it does not work that way, generally it is a group chat thread that peaks my interest on new books and this is because my to read list is already ridiculous
They also have more room on the margins of the pages so why it is all flushed center? At first I thought this is just a change I am not used to it. Now I am like ick not a fan.

Thanks for the links!

message 16: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments It's gotta be Amazon driven, just cause I'm sure the programmers here & staff know we don't want this crap, and have done for some time. I was part of the Beta feedback - it was even more vitriolic than this has been so far.

So they know we don't want it, and know they are gonna catch hell and no one wants to work in that sorta environment. You can just see them biting their virtual tongues. They can't really think this is better.

But its the Sell, Sell, Sell stuff that really tips it to being Amazon driven.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 127 comments I noticed the homepage change happened a little bit after my Kindle update. They both look really similar and I do think it's an Amazon influence.

Personally I don't like how the updates feel anymore, especially since it seems like nothing but book blurbs.

message 18: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Now that is even more depressing.
At least if it was the GR team there would be hope for something different or a return to the old homepage - Amazon nope not a chance it will stay

message 19: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Since the change there has been a lot less interaction in groups across the board (according to the Moderators Support Group with 1671 mbrs, so thats a lot of groups). If they want to kill groups, this is the way to go about it.

Crazy really, as a lot of people only come to GR for the cataloguing & the group discussions. And the groups help us find more books, thus doing their job for them.

message 20: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I believe that!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 127 comments I hope not! I adore the groups, it's one of the things that makes GR the number one place to go for book discussions.

message 22: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 87 comments I'm pretty much only here for the groups. The cataloguing is okay but given that I can't properly record rereads (without adding a buttload of editions and I reread a lot) if there weren't the groups I wouldn't be a member.

message 23: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 58 comments I don't care for it but since I am here so often, I knew ahead of time to bookmark the discussions page and just go there. Still occasionally hit the home button. I never felt the need to see every little update all friends made here.

wow you know I believe it. The only reason why I try new books is often because of group discussions.

Funny because as the group discussions have declined so has my desire to write good reviews now they are more like memos to me.

message 25: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments I hate that they changed this and it's driving me crazy.

message 26: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Yes, its like a death by a thousand cuts.

Usually, I get up & turn the computer on and it stays on till I go to bed. Now its late afternoon. And I never spend more than a couple of seconds on the homepage - just enough time to get to somewhere else.

message 27: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments If I was new to Goodreads I would never find a group to join. I like seeing what discussions are most recent in my groups. Why can't they just give us the option of what we want instead of forcing one or the other on us?

message 28: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I don't even look at the homepage I just catalog my books check this group and log off. I am annoyed with GR and I have been for awhile.

message 29: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments I don't go to the homepage anymore either.
