In the future on Mars? A P.I hired by woman to find her missing husband
People can transfer their consciousness into cyborg or is a android body into order to extend theirs lives. It's a very expensive procedure that is also a controversial one. The detective's friend whose father was a priest worries about what will happen to people souls after the transfer of consciousness.
There's also something about a man who after his transfer somebody made a duplicate of him. Why? Because he had discover a mine that was full of...Whatever is valuable in the future. Worth a lot of money. But the location is a secret.
Detective thinks that the duplicate was made so somebody could question the doppelganger without the police finding out that he was missing. The original wants the duplicate destroy.
SPOILER WARNING Husband was never missing, husband uploaded himself into his wife new body. Wife conscious destroyed by husband. Hubby made duplicate so that he could torture the duplicate for information on where the mine is. Hired the detective to throw off suspicion from her/him, thought the police would figure him out. The duplicate is allowed to live by the detective unbeknownst to the original. End of spoiler
I also know that there is another book in the series. More on that later.

Is it a short story? What makes it YA, are there teenage characters?

CraftyChara | 2120 comments Sorry it's not YA. I thought that it might be because little kids wouldn't enjoy it, but teenagers might. No teenage characters are in the story. It is also a short story.

No worries. We realize different groups have different guidelines. This group is quite large and we want everyone's request to have a chance to be seen.

CraftyChara | 2120 comments The second book in the series, the new client wants the P.I. to find who killed his ex wife after she had went through the transfer.
They moved to Mars many years ago hoping to make their fortune in mining. They split up after their baby girl named Jo Beth died from SIDS. Has an adult son Spoiler Alert! The son smothered the baby when he was four with a pillow case, because he was jealous that his parents weren't giving him any attention between the mining and the new baby. He couldn't stop the mining but he could stop his sister. His parents never got over their daughter's death and eventually separated
After the mother went through the transfer and thus was going to live longer the son couldn't live with the guilt any more so he killed her too. Spoiler End

Red Planet Blues (2013) by Robert J. Sawyer features a noir-type detective named Alex Lomax, the only private eye on Mars. This book is too recent, but Lomax appears in at least one other Sawyer story (Identity Theft).

CraftyChara | 2120 comments You know what? I think that this is it. The one I read was apart of an anthology of sci-fi stories, by I think different authors. Red Planet Blues a recently release book has more stories and is exclusively about the P.I. I'm going to order from my library to check. Thank you.
