SOLVED - Fantasy/sci fi, possibly YA, possibly a short series, read it at school in early 90s (UK) [s]

My memories of this are very hazy, but I think it was a book or maybe short series (up to a trilogy) with a setting more fantasy than sci fi, but I'm not certain on that. I have an impression of it being quite political, kind of like a YA Dune, with court intrigue. The hero was a prince or heir of some kind, I think, and while I have no idea what the actual plot was about, I do clearly remember one thing that I'm hoping will help with identifying it. See spoilers below, as it involves the ending. I read this at school in the UK when I was around 12, late 80s or early 90s. Thanks in advance!

So I'm pretty sure I found it, the Seven Citadels series by Geraldine Harris. Way more fantasy than sci fi, and I was misremembering the details of the ending in the spoilered section.

(view spoiler)[Turns out he wasn't really a 'faithful servant' but a grumpy, bitter companion named Gidjabolgo who gradually thawed over the course of the series. Also it wasn't the hero that made him handsome but a sorceress, though the hero is involved in the process. (hide spoiler)]
