ABANDONED. Fiction book about a man that is reincarnated until he reaches Nirvana.

I read this book in high school I 2003. I believe it was either a YA or adult book. The man is continuously reincarnated and each time he becomes more "zen." In his last life he has all the zen principles. I remember he didn't use a camera and children loved him, which both signified a pure soul. I've searched like crazy online and can't find this book! If anyone could help I'd really spores at it!
